Hi
I own a Revo and am thinking of buying a Series 5 or 5mx. The difference in price can be quite great, and speed or memory are not really a deterrent, especially since I have CF cards. But will the Series 5 accept all the same softwares as the 5mx? Will I be able to use Outlook as I do on my Revo, and will the applications I currently have on my Revo work on the 5? (I have SafePlace for example which I find invaluable to hold the myriad or so of passwords and other sensitive data I am forced to have)

I would strongly recommend getting a 5mx. Whilst the 5 will probably run all the apps you have (I used Safeplace on it myself), you will find it a lot slower than a Revo, and the OS is ER3, compared to the ER5 of the Revo and 5mx.

I have both and find the 5mx to be far better that the 5.

I'm in complete agreement with Yan and Nigel. :)
It's tempting to think that speed and memory are not too important, but you would definitely notice the speed difference after using a Revo. Also, CF disks, wonderful as they are for storage, do not totally solve the memory issue, as some applications can require quite a large chunk of internal memory in which to run.
Classic example is Opera, so if you have any aspirations to connect to the Internet, then I think you would find you were struggling with an S5, as I believe Nigel discovered just recently! ;)
You mention Outlook - one specific thing that cannot be done with the S5 is e-mail synchronisation with PC. This requires an ER5 machine - Revo, 5mx or Ericsson MC218.
By the way, if you come across an MC218 at a good price, it is more or less identical to the 5mx and would also be a very good choice.

I started with a 5 and upgraded to a 5mx when the screen hinge on my 5 broke.
As well as the performance issue mentioned above, the 5mx does have a slighter better screen (but still not as clear as the Revo's). It is also more physically robust - the coating will not bubble and peel like the 5's can (although a leather case is still a good idea if you are going to carry it around in your pocket) and the screen connector/cable has been redesigned so the major problem of this failing causing your screen to fail should not be such an issue. The screen hinges look the same but have not cracked on my 5mx so far .... (looks for a piece of real wood to touch)

My first PDA was a 5ive, then a 5mx, then a Mako (Revo Plus). The 5mx is much better than the 5ive in screen quality and speed. The Mako is a delight in screen quality, speed, and size. Expansion capability is nil. The biggest drawback is that damned battery, nothing simple like the 2 5s. I've put mine in cold storage and am using one of the 5s. I may go back to it one of these days, but my guess is that I'll never trust using it away from home - too many times I've been out, went to use it, and it was dead. If I can't trust it, why use it.
Re SafePlace. It's a good app, but I've found it ever better to create my own Data file with customized labels, then encrypt it with the freeware Crypto. Can't customize SafePlace.
