Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Is my screen broken?
Hello,
I have a Netbook that I haven't used much, and haven't used in quite a while. I opened it up to see how the battery was doing and to charge it, and the screen appears to be knackered. There are two big grey boxes filling up maybe a third of the screen with what look like cracks running across them, although the screen feels fine to the fingertips. I can still activate the icons underneath, so the sensitivity is still there. I have (I think) attached a photo which shows the problem very clearly.
What's the issue here? Any help you can give will be very much appreciated!
Thanks,
Siri

Wow Siri,
This is looking weird (and horrifying at the same time). Have seen a lot of cracked screens (Psion Series 3 and 5), but NEVER one like this. Did you by accident had something heavy stored on the netBook? If I'm right screen is multi-layerd like Psion 5/5MX, so my guess would be that the underlaying part is cracked. You have to let it examine by PosLtd.
Regards,
Richard
It is rather striking, isn't it :-) I have no idea how it could have happened. I don't think I put anything heavy on it, but I have just moved house and who knows what might have occurred in the chaos.
I imagine a replacement screen would be extremely expensive - LCD replacement listed at POSLTD is £250. I live in Toronto, so there would be shipping costs on top. Ouch. (There are no repair places here that I'm aware of.)
I think this is simply not worth my while to repair - it will cost more than the Psion is worth. Bummer.
Thanks for your input.

Hi Siri,
I'm sorry to hear that. Was thinking you were from the UK. I don't know if there are any repair centers in/near Toronto. You can try: http://www.psionteklogix.com/public.aspx?s=com&p=News&POid=527 ; look also for their contact adresses!
Also here: http://www.phaedrav.com/peat/ you can find more Psionenthousiasts from Toronto, maybe they can help?
In case you decide not to repair, but to get rid of the Psion, please DON'T THROW it away! You can always send it to me, for my private Psionmuseum/collection. Always looking for more stuff, even broken, for spares.
Try to buy yourself a secondhand netBook from ebay.
Regards,
Richard
Hello Siri
This information is from Martin's site Pscience5 and was listed in the links section. Hope this helps.

Repairs of Psions and other PDAs in Toronto, Canada.
Please post if the information is still current. i have a 3a in need of service. Yes the dreaded screen cable issue.
Marc - Thanks for the heads-up on the Toronto place. The details are
Palmtop Support Services
1235 Bay Street. 10th Floor
Toronto, Ontario Canada. M5R 3K4
Ph: 416-410-Palm(7256)
However, you should phone first as it appears they (or rather, he, as I think it's one guy) isn't set up for receiving callers. I turned up and the receptionist phoned his cell, and we spoke on the phone about my Netbook problem. The bad news (for me) is that he doesn't deal with Netbook/Series 7, as he can't get the parts. The good news (for you) is that he does deal with Series 3 and 5.
Richard - I got the Netbook from eBay last year :-) In the circumstances, I plan to put it up for auction on eBay, as it may be that someone has a good screen but a knackered computer. Also, the battery is in good shape and that must be worth something. It's a shame: I have the original box, instruction manual, etc. I could think about getting the Netbook fixed but I am reluctant because (1) I don't really use it, and (2) if there are any repair issues in the future, I'm back to square one.
Thanks for your help, guys.
Cheers,
Siri
Your welcome Siri
Wish it could have been better for your problem. I plan on contacting them(him) soon in regards to the cost of repairing my Series 3a.
