I have just upgraded from a 5mx to a Series 7 upgrade to Netbook. I have a Lucent Silver Wavelan wifi card with the drivers installe and a Buffalo 11g wireless router that I use for my pc & laptop. My question is how do I get the netbook to work wifi? Simple steps would be appreciated!

Martin Guthrie wrote a great set of articles about WiFi on a netBook:

Have a look, and please come back with any questions.

Thanks for this. I get as far as "Configuring your PC" Because I use my wireless router as a wired router there is no "Wireless Connection" icon. I have tried my wireless laptop which does work wirelessly. After much light flickering on the netbook card I get a "Network error". So where do I go from here? Also how does this work in a wifi zone away from home? Thanks again

What are your ethernet setting?
In the ethernet setting, I've left the "Hostname" blank and defined DHCP Configuration method. So the netBook searches for the nearest/strongest WiFi source. At home this isn't a problem, and so far it hasn't been a problem out and about either. I presume that to identify a specific WiFi network if would be necessary to specify the hostname.

Ian on his EPOC FAQ http://www.epocfaq.co.uk has the following
"the 751 vintage 7Book is only just capable of supplying enough power" so I wonder if this is a power issue. Though the Lucent Silver uses a low power chip set.

Ian also has a section about configuring WiFi that's worth a look.

Nope, done everything still doesn't work. Lots of flickering lights on the card though. I know the router works wirelessly 'cos I use my laptop.

Please post your ethernet setting, perhaps it will give someone a clue.

Do you use mac address filtering or security on the WiFi router? I wondered if the card had been registered or that encryption was set on the router but not for the card.

Is your router password protected?
Are you using WEP or WPA?

Just start blank, without any protection. If that works add some protection, but one thing at the time.

Go into the setings of the router and try to find the Wireless options.
If you can't find the options, go to the seller of router and ask him.

If the PC doesn't work, then the netBook doesn't work neither.
You wrote that you have a "Lucent Silver" card, realise that the "Lucent Silver" card can handle up to 64bit encryption.

But the Psion works only with 11b technology

OK, router set to auto for 11g/b
Lucent card works fine in my pc laptop
This is definately a Psion config issue!

... and your settings are?

Based upon: Standard settings
Configuration Method: DHCP
Device: Lucent
Peer-to-peer mode: Check
AP density: low
Transmit: 1 Mbps
Encryption: Uncheck

All normal so should work. What I get is power on and continous flickering of transmit/receive. Monitoring NetStatRF shows a connection but then Opera closes with "Could not connect to remote server"

I've never used peer-to-peer mode. See if this helps.

by comparison mine are:
-- Service
Configuration Method: DHCP
Device: Lucent
-- Options
WaveLAN network name: blank
Pere to peer mode: un-ticked
AP density: high
Transmit rate: 11.0 Mbps
Fixed: un-ticked
Medium reservation: un-ticked
Card power management: un-ticked
Receive all multicasts: un-ticked
Maximum sleep duration: 0 ms
Encryption: un-ticked
-- Advanced
IEEE 802.3 encapsulation: un-ticked
ARP cache timeout: 1800 secs
