I found that setting the brightness bar on my Tungsten to almost zero (backlight off) causes the whole screen to flicker. Battery is fully charged and both soft or hard reset don't resolve the problem. Anyone else seen this on their Tungsten or any other PDA for that matter?

I just pulled out my TT and tried several low backlight settings. No flickering display on mine at any of the lower settings.

Have you tried looking under both incandescent and fluorescent lamps to see if the type of lighting caused the flickering? I know that fluorescents can cause a flickering effect in some situations (e.g. television displays, spinning tops, etc.)

Mine flickers too on the lowest settings. If I use the D-pad to increment the slider from the far left, there's 38 right clicks before the backlight starts to illuminate and 2 clicks where it is flickering. On the 41st right click I have very low illumination that doesn't flicker.

I can't believe I fired up the TT and started counting incremental DPad clicks in Backlight Control mode! :D ... From full off (i.e. slider all the way to the left), I require only 2 right clicks of the DPad before the backlight begins to illuminate. I went all the way from 0 and stopped somewhere past 50 clicks. I still saw no flickering at any of the levels. I tried under both incandescent and fluorescent lighting. Is the flickering you see erratic or is it more of an oscillation. How rapid is the flickering? Several times per second or several seconds apart?

OldBlue ...(trying his darndest to duplicate the flickering, because if everyone else has it, he wants it, too! :D )

The flickering is very rapid and irratic. I'd guess around 5 times/second.

Flickering at clicks 1,2,5, and 6 on my unit (I didn't check much beyond that) and it is visible in just about any or no lighting. Palm advised that if a hard reset does not resolve the problem the unit ought to be repaired/replaced.

I'm not bothered by it. I get full range of backlighting. The flickering is at illumination levels so low that I can hardly see it. Can't imagine why I'd ever want a backlight at that low an illumination level. I've got satisfactory range of adjustment too. On mine, at 40 clicks or so, the slider is less than a quarter of the way across. I can't see wanting to return mine for this "problem".

I'm giving up on finding the flicker. It's either my old eyes or maybe my TT just doesn't have it. My wife and I both tried and could not get the screen to flicker. (Actually, I've been staring at the TT screen for so long, the afterimage of the screen is burned into my eyes and the whole room here is flickering! :D )

I believe that not all TT's exhibit this behavior.

I got very different results when I move the brightness bar down.
When the bar is completely at the darkest level I still have a fairly bright screen. It doesn't fade out completely. I can disable the light using the check box and it will go out but I can not get it to go out with the bar. Moving the bar in the other direction, produced a very, very , very bright screen, almost unusable.

Amazon offered an advanced exchange for my Tungsten and I received the new unit today. Appears this one has the same problem, but it is not as noticeable. Either I'm having some poor luck or the screen flicker is not all that uncommon. I'm going to settle, however, since it's true I would harldy ever use such low brightness settings.
