I've downloaded the WM 2005 upgrade for my iPaq hx4700, and tried to load it up. I downloaded the upgrade from the HP site, after checking it was the correct one for my iPaq.
However everytime I try to upgrade it, the bootloader gets to 51% then hangs, and I'm getting a message that the USB has timed out.
I've upgraded the Active Sync to 4.1 (included in the download) as part of it, but after five attempts I'm not getting any fiurther and my iPaq is currently unusable.
Any ideas/suggestions as to why this is happening and how I an overcome the problem?

All replies gratefully received.

Try update Activesync to latest version
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/activesync/activesync45.mspx
Restart the desktop, connect the iPAQ to it (perhaps try another direct usb port, not through a hub) and run the upgrade again.

Thanks for that.
I did what you suggested, and loaded Active Sync 4.5, then restarted all my PC.
I then disconnected all the USB cables with the exception of my wireless Keyboard/mouse which I plugged into a USB slot. My cradle was plugged into a USB 2 slot
Then I shut down all the other programs that run in the background and disconnected from my home network, so all that was running would be the upgrade program.
It went from the start as follows: 0.1%, 0.2% , 1%, 1.1% 1.2% following this sequence through all the odd numbers up to 49.2% when it went to 50%. then through 50.1% to 50.9% then 51 % where it just hung, before getting the USB timeout message again.
I then did all this again only swapping the keyboard and cradle connections, where it again hung at 51%, and then timed out.
I have downloaded a new copy of the updater in case the first was corrupted, and it still hangs.
Ant other ideas?
(BTW I have contacted hp direct and registered this to see if they can offer help too.)

Are you running any firewall or security software on the desktop? Disable it temporarily, also disable any power saver or screen saver on the desktop, and make sure to plug in the power adapter to the iPAQ.

I had done all that, however the problem is solved.
I took the cradle, power unit and the whole downloaded program on a flash drive to my kid's PC, then went through the proceedure in one go!
I think the family PC needs some attention, somewhere.

Thanks for all your help in any case, I'm now back with a working iPaq.

If you go here

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=325727

you can also put wm6 on, its a lot faster than wm5, also the HP wm5 upgrade is not worth putting on, you will find it starts to slow down to a crawl.

The above site also have there own wm5 if you dont fancy wm6 thats faster and better than the HP version of wm5.

I am using there wm6 and its great, very fast and stable.

Seeing WM5 slowed to a crawl, I took your advice and upgraded.
Very pleased with the speed etc., and it runs better than WM5.
However I now have a problem with e-mail. Under my original OS and WM5 I had two lots of e-mail settings for my e-mail, one for Bluetooth, and one for Wi-Fi. I was unable to connect to the Wi-Fi with Bluetooth and vice-versa.
I have tried to set this up but both sets now want to connect to Bluetooth. Anyone know why it is doing this?

Disregard the above problem, I just went through all the settings again, and realised I had them both set to indentical settings in the Advanced tab.
Memo to self - never try to do this after a long day!

All the other stuff about WM still applies though, most impressed!

Do I have to upgrade to WM5 to get to WM6? If I have to, where in the thread is the WM5? Do i have to pay for it? I will if I have to.

I upgraded from WM5 but if you read through the whole thread there are people who have gone straight to WM6 without any problems.
It is free but you can make a donation via paypal.
There are also a great set of instructions and the bootloader on this link (http://wm6.flyingarizona.net/).
It is worthwhile, and my 4700 is flying along when I use it.

Hope this helps

by pressing the contacts, itask and reset botton simultaneously, the bootloader screen is supposed to come up. That is the screen with the HP logo and the reg number. Every time I do this, my os starts to load and I come to the start screen. How do I keep the os from starting? I am new to this. Thanks for the help.

I used active sync to upload the new OS. When I pressed iTask, Contacts & Reset I got an unlit screen with the HP logo. Place it in the cradle, then launch the bootloader, and select the upgrade module. It should work.
Full intructions are HERE (http://wm6.flyingarizona.net/instructions.txt).
Hope this helps

Thanks for your help. I have followed all the steps. When I push contacts+itask+reset, my unit shows the bootloader screen then resets the OS every time. Whether I hold the reset botton for 1 or 5 secs, it always resets. How can I push those three simultaneously and make the bootloader screen come on without doing a reset?

How to do backup 2003 contacts and such and restore them on a wm6 device?

Sync them with desktop Outlook, then create new partnership with new pda and snc them back.
