I have the magellan GPS companion running the Rand McNally software for mapping. I first bought a Sandisk 128 mb SD card and it was crap, don't buy them. I am now using a PNY 128 mb SD card. My question is about using the SD card. I am saving maps on this card, hence the large card, but the access time is extremely slow. The maps are on the order of 5 mb and take about 10 minutes to load. Is there any process or software to speed this up, is this access time acceptable for SD cards, do smaller cards work faster, essentially what can I do.

Here is an update from Palm for the m5xx. it might speed it up.

I think that I have found a way to avoid the problem. I am just going to save smaller maps. I did do the upgrades, but unfortunately it only made a small difference. The big problem with this method is that it is very labor intensive. It will probably take about an hour to split up the one big map into smaller more manageable maps.
Or I may try different software, specifically Delorme.
Any opinions on other GPS mapping software?

Try using a 3rd party application to boost(overclock) your cpu , dodgey i know , but if you want speed , you must take risks.
FastCPU is one off the top of my head, and allocate more cpu power to your card or to the mapping application .
Be in mind that this will void your warranty , but thats your choice.

I have talked with palm, but of course they would not have anything to do with any third party software. I then called magellan and they were very helpful. They called and talked to rand McNally. The problem lies with the program itself. The program only allots so much time to search for maps. The short of it is that the program will only find about sixty maps.
