I just bought a Clie T665c and cant play MP3's. I ripped them from my CD's and tansferred them to a regular Memory stick. THe manual indicates that i can play regular MP3's on standard Memory stick, but the Audio player refuses to play them saying: "This track is unavailable for the following reasons: The memory stick media is write-protected or does not suppoer copyright control, or the track file is corrupted."
I have followed the procedure as as stated at the manual without luck. I peer bought another and is experiencing the eact same situation. Any hints?

I read something similar..... Somewhere someone said that to play mp3 your memory stick has to be MAGIC GATE MADE BY SONY. If this is true it is a bit of cheek by sony hopefully we can get to the truth- Help ANYONE!!!

I'm not much of an MP3 user (i.e. I don't rip my own MP3s, nor do I have much of a collection), but I do have some experience with MP3s and my T665.
... All of that to say, on my T665 some tracks are not playable (they produce the message you mentioned), and others are. I think the tracks that can be played were ripped without copyright information.
In order to play MP3s that contain the copyright information, you need a MagicGate MemoryStick and you have to use software to "checkout" the tracks from your PC.
Hope this helps explain the issue.

I just ripped music from CD to MP3 by means of Media Player (Using the InterVIDEO $9.95 add on) and the track played just fine (using the my old memory stick). so go figure!
Thanks all for your replies. at least i was not alone on this!

Remember that MP3 files used by the Clie have to be 44.1K
and 32 bit, or they will not work!
This was major disappointment for me when I bought
my Clie, as I had a whole bunch of lectures I wanted
to hear, and have had to convert each and every one of these
using RazorLam.

Hello,,,
I have a 32meg plain MS I have been using for my Sony Cyber-Shot Camera. :D This works in the Sony Clie also.
You can make the MP3 player work without buying a 'special' MS.
When you record your MP3 songs, there will be an option for CopyProtection, on or off. You MUST have it turned ON for the Clie to play it.
I have all my MP3s recorded without CopyProtection on and at a nice LARGE bit rate, so I can listen on my computer nice quality sound.
I have been rerecording my original MP3s to a lesser (~80kbps or less) quality bit rate (and @44100 Hz too), just make sure the CopyRight bit is ON. I move these *.copyright.mp3 files to f:\PALM\PROGRAMS\MSAUDIO\ (no subdirectories supported yet in AudioPlayer!).
Each 'Frame' of music has a single bit either 0 or 1, off or on, so a filter that could flip this single bit in EVERY FRAME in an MP3 would be much appreciated. (rename this new version *.copyright.mp3 please?? So I know what is original, and what is flipped).
Have fun listening...

I just set up my new palm to play MP3's this PM.
I copied mp3's that were ripped with music match 160 rate.
No problems.
Started transfer in audio player then did a copy and paste in windows file explorer (win98SE).

I solved my problem some time ago. I just formatted the Memory Stick using the Memory stick formatter included in the CLIE CDROM. Just copied and palyed OK!
Thank You ALL for your help!

Hi,
I've had no problems playing mp3 files from a regular MS. I purchased a IO Data stick from memorysuppliers.com and downloaded several songs from the net and have copied some from my own CDs using Real Player. They sound great. You only need the Magic Gate card if you prefer to use the ATRAC3 format.
