Before the ethernet enabled OS was released, I used my DACOM 56k+fax 10Mb Ethernet Gold Card to dial in to my ISP. I had no problems.

Since I installed the latest OS (453), I've been using the same card with my cable modem. I've had no problems.

PROBLEM:
With the new OS, the netBook cannot dialup with the card anymore.

When the dialup process is invoked from the Email app, the message box lists "Initializing", then "Connecting to internet", then a dialog box appears with the text, "Problem connecting to Remote mailbox".

I have the audio enabled in the modem and system settings, but during the above process I do not hear a dial tone or the modem dialing.

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

1.) The new OS contains a new setting that I am unaware of.

2.) There is some sort of a switch (in the firmware?) in the card that is stuck on ethernet mode, and therefore dialup mode cannot be used. If this is the case, then does anyone know if there exists an diagnostic program for the card for a Windows PC?

Has anyone else had this problem? Any input would be appreciated.

I think you can download all the latest software and firmware upgrades for you card from Psion;s website. You need to have registered at least one product with them to gain access to te MyPsion area. Once there, just select the type of card and find the download you need.

Just a thought, may be worth checking, Yan's site as I am sure there is a known compatibility problem with this card and the netbook/latest OS.

If this relates to another card, you could always try resetting your machine and trying it again. Also on the ethernet settings, what card type have you selected for the LAN connection? Psion Dacom Gold Card or Psion Gold Card. I have a CombineIT 56k 10/100 LAN card and use the Psion Gold Card setting. I do suffer from Triple Beep Resets but that is another story. All connections work OK though.

wanman, thanks for the ideas. I had forgotten about the mypsion site. I became a registered user on it a while ago.

I don't have the means to update the card today (maybe tomorrow), but I downloaded and tried out a small EPOC app called "EasySwitch". It's purpose is to change the country setting in the modem card. EasySwitch was able to read the card. It reported that a country had not been set yet, "Unknown Country". The app allows you select a country from a list, and I selected and registered mine (Canada). I have to wait until I get home tonight to see if it fixed my problem.

More details about my situation:

- I only have one card, "DACOM 56k+fax 10Mb Ethernet Gold Card NetGlobal". (It and my netBook work flawlessly connected to either my cable modem, or my LinkSys router, which is connected to the same cable modem).

- I tried resetting the netBook and re-installing the OS, but the problem persists.

- I am still able to dialup via my mobile phone.

I'll see tonight if EasySwitch happened to fix the problem, otherwise I'll try updating the card. Thanks again.

i think u were right with your first hypothesis. 'wait for dialtone' defaults to off in the newer OS releases; i'd guess this is the problem.

EasySwitch did not have any affect. :-(

diem, thanks for the suggestion. I've never looked that deeply into the Dialing settings; I usually accept the defaults. I just checked mine, and the "Wait for dial tone" was activated, as was the "Tone dial outside" option. I tried dialing with various combinations of these settings, but all produced the same result.

Tomorrow I'll have access to a laptop and I'll be able to update the DACOM modem/ethernet card's firmware. Hopefully, it will work.

I'm an idiot.

The Modem Speed was set to "115200". I was certain this was OK. I thought it would get downgraded to the fastest possible speed.

Anyway, I tried setting it to "57600", and voila, it worked.

So much for informative error messages.

Thanks for reading.

Well, I feel an idiot too - for not suspecting the problem. Only last week I discovered that my new Psion CombineIT 56k modem refuses to connect at 115200, and has to be changed to 57600, unlike my older Dacom 56k and my V34, which connect quite happily on either speed. It took a while to figure out though.

These quirks are sent to try us!
