Which is better for a high-school student who plans to keep one for about 3-4 years?

What precisly will you use it for? Games, papers, organization, everything. The sj30 is 10x as good overall, but it depends how much you are willing to pay for it. Cheers

I'd go for SJ30. Better in every way (except MS, but I had a few of those from exploded digi-cams, so it didn't matter), plus it's actually cheaper once you factor in a few accessories and stuff. Maybe not cheaper, but only about $19.99 more (no, SONY isn't paying me to advertise for their CLIEs', so they'd better thank me. Except I said their cameras exploded. They don't!)

Is the sj30 really only about 20$ more??? Wow, no debate, go for the clie. And no, sony doesn't pay me to advertise their stuff, but sometimes I do anyway!:D

"... plans to keep one for about 3-4 years?"

May I suggest you reconsider planning for so long? Think of what you could buy 3-4 years ago (Psion IIIc, 1 MB Palm Pilot or some long dissappeared other brandname) and imagine having to use that today; you'd be glad it died on you years ago.

"Normal" lifespan for a PDA in my opinion is 1 year, at a pinch 2, but after that the battery goes out, or something breaks and it's technically obsolete anyway.

Although I am a Clié-fan myself, for the rough and tumble of student life I suggest a Palm M series becuase they are the hardest to break.

If you want to play arcade style games, the buttons on the m130 are more comfortable.

Palm m130 comes with a base thingy to charge the battery (with Sony you just have to leave it lying on the table or whatever). I chose the Palm because it works with WIndows 95 as well as XP. (I've got an old and new computer). Last time I checked, there's a $75 rebate available from amazon.com for the Palm. However I hear that the Sony's screen is somewhat larger.
Good luck!

not only does the sony have a bigger screen, but it has twice as much memory (16 mb) twice the screen resolution (340x340) is faster, and is only $20 more. The cradle vs. cable is trivial at most, and I am fairly sure there is a way to get it to work with Windows 95. Even if there isn't, that obviously doesn't matter unless you USE windows 95. sj30 all the way.
