Stuck on updating

Ok so a few weeks ago a client at work turned in his pda. Its a Ipaq 2410. So yesterday I tried to wipe it and update the ROM. Well he password protected it. I tried to guess it cause most people use something simple. NO luck. It rebooted and when I tried to update the ROM to wipe it all out it gets stuck at "updating recovery state. Please wait." Never moves. I tried to hard reset. HOld in tast, contacts and power and reset. Comes up to Pre-BL screen and sits there. I try to update ROM while on that screen and again nothing. Anyone got any ideas? Is it just a paperweight now?

To hard reset, while holding the 2 outer buttons ,press in the reset button for a few seconds (no power button involved).

Tried that already. It just reboots back to updating. Is this toast?
