Hi all!

Is there any way to completely format  my iPAQ 3830 PDA (from Compaq sure) for reinstall the Pocket PC 2002 OS. I need to completely clear the RAM and the ROM memories. And where can I download this OS? :(

Thanks.

Hi, the OS being in ROM cannot be erased (sort of). To reset it just flip the little switch at the bottom of the unit, then switch it back on. This is how my 3635 can be hard reset anyway. Being as the OS is in ROM you cannot download the OS. But the hard reset switch should solve your problem as it will be reset back to the factory defaults.
Hope this helps

Good answers for an iPaq 3600, but he has an iPaq 3800 series.

Are you saying then that the 3800 does not have a slider
switch on the bottom or that that the OS is not on ROM
and cannot be reset to factory defaults by initiating
a hard reset? Not sure why the comments on the 3600 would
not apply generally to this original poster?

Please let us know . . .

On the 3800 there is a small inset "button" on the bottom of the iPaq that you press and hold for a certain length of time to do a hard reset, but from his post it appears that he not only wants to clear his RAM but he also wants to erase his ROM.

I need to completely clear the RAM and the ROM memories.

I am not sure if one is able to erase the ROM completely without using a 3rd party software...

The 3800 and 3900 series do not have a master power switch. Hard reset is accomplished by pressing the two outer hardware buttons while depressing the reset button (what sick person thought of this, I wonder). Then connect the power cable directly to the iPAQ to turn it back on. Next, at least in the case of the 3800 series, you might want to apply the lastest EUU patch.

Either way, when the system boots up after power is applied, the only software on the device will be in ROM. It would be like getting a new iPAQ. BTW, if you flahsed the ROM before hard resetting, the OS will be the version created by the EUU or other patch.

hard reset on 38xx & 39xx done that way to avoid accidentally doing a hard reset (like when my 2yr old son did on my 3630).

Pressing the 2 outer buttons simultaneously & pressing the soft reset button at the same time will restore the iPaq to it's factory state, but sometimes the iPaq file store is cleared too despite what is mentioned in the CD manual.

Why the need to erase ROM?

I can't do nothing with the Hard Reset. This file is always here. I don't know how, but in my happy opinion, this file is transfered in ROM memory..... And now I want to reset my iPAQ completly (RAM & ROM) for reinstall the Pocket PC. But how. OR maybe there is one good program that can operate in ROM.

Thanks
