How easy is it to migrate data from an older non-SmartPhone PDA to a new SmartPhone?

I've been using a Palm Tungsten T3 for several years now, and when my cell phone contract is up, I'm thinking about upgrading to a Palm Centro smartphone. I'm concerned, though, that I won't be able to transfer all of my appointments, contacts, etc from my old PDA to the new one. I'm currently using PalmDesktop version 4.1.2 (the one that came in the box with my Tungsten), so I'm sure there have been several new versions since then. I'm worried that a new version of the software will come with the new Centro that won't be compatible with my older one, and I'll be forced to re-enter all of my information by hand.

Has anyone on here tried to migrate their files from an older PDA to a newer one? Is it as difficult as I'm making it out to be?

Hi

Don't worry.

Install the Palm Desktop that comes with the Centro over your existing Palm Desktop (your data will be preserved; I suggest making a copy of it just in case; you will find your data under C:\Program Files\Palm\[HotSynd ID] or C:\Program Files\PalmOne\[HotSync ID]).

Give your Centro the same HoySync ID as your old T3 and everything will come across on the first sync. Be sure to move the Backup folder (found under C:\Program Files\Palm\[HotSynd ID] or C:\Program Files\PalmOne\[HotSync ID]) to your desktop to prevent all your T3 apps from migrating to the Centro as some might not be compatible.

Once your PIM stuff is on your Centro you can install apps one at a time and make sure that they work before moving-on to the next.

Good luck!

Thanks so much for all your help. I backed up my appointments, memos, and contacts, and after I installed the new version of Desktop, it was very easy to import them.

I really love my new Centro, and the transition was nearly seamless (despite the fighting I had to do with tech support to get the internet working properly).
