When I try to sync Outlook 2000 with my iPaq 3650 I get the following messages:

"Synchronization cannot start because this desktop computer cannot access necessary information. Restart this desktop computer and synchronize again. If the problems persists and the desktop computer is running Microsoft Outlook 2000 open Outlook 2000 and click detect and repair. Otherwise contact your network administrator."

"Synchronization cannot be started because you were unable to log onto the network and access information. Restart your desktop computer and synchronize again. If the problem persists contact your network administrator."

I am not a part of a network. Only the files in Outlook 2000 (contacts, calendar, etc.) cannot be transfered.

I previously had the same problem (not logging on) with my Palm Pilot m105. It was never resolved. I had hoped that the new unit would make this problem to go away.

I am computer illiterate(!) and need some hand-holding to fix this! Help!

I'm trying to help a friend fix this very same problem on his 1910, is there anybody including the person who originated this post that has a solution by now?

If not and it has synched previously, then all it needs is probably a soft reboot (by sticking the stylus up its bum, bottom right!)
Works for my ipaq 3970, when it acts up.

From Microsoft Knowledgebase:

--------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS:When you try to synchronize a Windows CE-based device to a desktop computer for the first time after upgrading to Microsoft Outlook 2000, you may receive the following error messages

Synchronize cannot be started because this desktop computer could not access necessary information. Please restart the computer.
-and-

Synchronization cannot be started because you are not able to log onto the network and access information. Restart your desktop computer and synchronize again. If the problem persists, contact your network administrator.

Note that items such as mobile channels and files synchronize successfully, but this issue prevents tasks, contacts, appointments and messages from synchronizing. Also, you may not be able to connect to a network, and restarting the desktop computer does not resolve the problem.

CAUSE:This problem can occur if Outlook 2000 does not properly update the copy of the Mapi32.dll file in the Windows\System folder during the Outlook 2000 installation. The file is supposed to be replaced with a stub which points to the real file in a separate folder. If the Mapi32.dll file is not replaced during Outlook 2000 setup, ActiveSync is not able to initialize Outlook 2000 for synchronization with Pocket Outlook items on the Windows CE-based device, and this generates the error message.

RESOLUTION:To resolve this problem:
In Outlook, click Detect and Repair on the Help menu, and then click Start.
Disconnect the Windows CE-based device from the computer, and then quit Outlook. Test to determine if the problem is resolved, and if not, continue to the next steps.
Click Start, point to Find and then click Files or Folders.
In the Named box, type mapi32.dll, click My Computer in the Look In box, and then click Find Now.
Right-click the Mapi32.dll file, click Rename, type mapi32.old, and then press ENTER to accept the name change. Note that if there are multiple copies of the Mapi32.dll file in the list, rename each file to a unique name.
Quit the Find tool, and then start Outlook.
When Outlook starts and you receive a prompt that files are missing, click Yes to permit the Windows Installer to replace them.
Reconnect the Windows CE device to the desktop computer and attempt to synchronize.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Hope the above procedure helps.

Assuming you are running Windows NT5 (W2K or WXP), try one of these solutions:
1. a. uncradle the iPAQ and delete all files in C:\documents and settings\<your username>\application data\Microsoft\ActiveSync\profiles\<you iPAQ name>
b. soft-reset the iPAQ and try again

2. a. Rename your device (Start, Settings, System, About, DeviceID)
b. Cradle and wait for New Partnership dialog

Once the device is synchronized you can delete the old device directory (see 1.a above).

I have an ipaq h5455, and i had the same problem, I called tech support and they told me to just use your pocket pc pen, and click the reset botton on the bottom of the poket pc, and when the ipaq loads to the main screen, put it back in the cradle, and it will automaticaly connect its self with no proublems. It worked!

Hi

An IPAQ 3850 won't sync Calendat, Contacts, and Task, but does sync Inbox and notes with Outlook 2K (on Win 2K)

I have tried all the above, nothing works. We have recently migrated our mail server to Exchange 2K (from 5.5) - I am sure this has something to do with it but can't find the setting.

Help!!!

I had been messing around for about 2 hours trying to figure it out before I found your post. Thanks!!!!! The fix you pulled from Microsoft knowledge base worked perfectly!
