i have a 1 gb SD impact card but my compaq 3950 doesnt read it. do you know why? or how can i fix this?

Is it by chance an SDHC card? My iPaq needed a patch to upgrade the drivers to use SDHC cards. See this discussion:

SDHC will not work on your iPAQ. If the card is regular SD card, try format it on the desktop with FAT or FAT32. And you may also need to do ROM upgrade
