Might be able to help if you tell us the make and model of the modem you have! ;)

I have the psion goldcard modem and a Dynalink 56K PC-CARD modem. Diem's site also lists several types of modem which work correctly with a netbook.

As modem PC cards gradually become fewer - there are still loads you can buy but no-one is really bringing out new ones, we have done some internal testing of CF modem cards which, unlike PC cards continue to enter the market. We only tested 2 cards at theis stage and the results are as follows:

1. Pretec CF 56K CompactModem - Retail price £58.83 from www.expansys.com
This modem worked fine in both netBooks that were tried. We used the Comms
application to send AT commands to the modem, then set up the Internet and
Modems applets so the Web browser could be used. We successfully browsed a
number of web pages without any problems.

2. Socket Compact Flash 56K modem - retail price £81.25 from
www.expansys.com
This modem caused one machine to reset as soon as it was inserted. We were able to communicate with the card using AT commands, but when dialling up to
the ISP, the card itself seemed to lock up as soon as the connection was
made. This looks as though the problem may be to due with using excessive
power - although this seems odd, given that modems typically use very little
power.

So, of these two, we would clearly recommend the Pretec modem card. Note that a CF card to PCMCIA adaptor is required to use this.

Thanks for the information Harvey. I tried a Viking components compact flash modem a few months ago, it worked but strangely enough this caused the triple-beep reset problem.
