I have an iPAQ 3760 with Pocket PC 2002 Premium installed. The internal battery has been dead for several years. I have an expansion pack attached with a battery that I've been using for 3 years with no problems. When I would place it in the dock, the amber light would blink for awhile and then quit indicating that the charging cycle was complete.

Now, it just keeps blinking. When I look at the screen showing the charging status, it shows that the battery in the expansion pack has fully charged, but the internal battery just keeps charging. I knew the internal battery is dead, but the expansion pack battery has been okay.

Here's the problem: While the ipaq is turned on, I can take it out of the cradle and it's fine. I can use it for as long as the expansion pack battery holds up which is about 1 hour of constant use. So that implies that the battery is fine. However, when I turn the ipaq off (while it's uncradled), it won't turn back on until I put it back in the cradle just long enough to turn it on. While it's cradled, I can turn it on and off just fine.

It seems the expansion pack battery is okay. What's going on? Is it possible the OS is corrupted? I've done hard resets and installed all the updates I could get from HPs website but it didn't help.

Any ideas?

Thanks

There is nothing wrong with the OS. I think the reason is the battery from the expansion pack can only trickle charge the main battery. You cannot run the unit directly from the expansion pack battery. It's just not strong enough to start up the unit by itself. You just need to replace the main battery, it's not expensive and not to difficult to replace (it usually comes with instruction).

Where do you suggest I buy it? Would an electronics store have it? I've seen it on ebay from hong kong, but I don't feel comfortable buying it from that far away. Can you recommend an online store that sells them at reasonable prices? I use it for Geocaching, so it's important to me.

Thanks!

You were exactly right. I replaced the internal battery and all is well. I would have thought the external battery would have been sufficient but I guess not.

Thanks so much!
