how do I go about upgrading my htc windows mobile 5.0 to 6.0?

What HTC model do you have? And did you get this through mobile company or is this an unlocked device?

its an htc P4000 and its from telus but I did buy it used it was like 2 weeks old its not an unlocked phone.

ok cool thank you now one problem....I have activesync 4.5 for windows XP....I am aware I need to backup my phone before installing the upgrade due to probable loss of data, so how do I back up everything like 3rd party apps, email settings and accounts, contacts, web favs...???

For Outlook Mobile data such as email, calendar, contacts,.. you will need to sync with desktop Outlook.
You will need to re-install 3rd party applications.
For other data, copy the files to a folder on the desktop.
Or you can obtain 3rd party backup software such as Sprite Backup. Then you just backup, update ROM and restore.
