just curious.. also what should the transfer rate be for usb 1? I'm asking cuz my ipaq (which i'm gettin rid of and gettin an axim) takes like 7 minutes to copy over a 40meg mpeg.. doesn't this seem way too long? this is using winxp.

According to www.usb.org:

serial port: 115kbits/s (.115Mbits/s)
standard parallel port: 115kBYTES/s (.115MBYTES/s)
Original USB: 12Mbits/s (1.5MBYTES/s)
ECP/EPP parallel port: 3MBYTES/s
IDE: 3.3-16.7MBYTES/s
SCSI-1: 5MBYTES/s
SCSI-2 (Fast SCSI, Fast Narrow SCSI): 10MBYTES/s
Fast Wide SCSI (Wide SCSI): 20MBYTES/s
Ultra SCSI (SCSI-3, Fast-20, Ultra Narrow): 20MBYTES/s
UltraIDE: 33MBYTES/s
Wide Ultra SCSI (Fast Wide 20): 40MBYTES/s
Ultra2 SCSI: 40MBYTES/s
IEEE-1394: 100-400Mbits/s (12.5--50MBYTES/s)
Hi-Speed USB: 480Mbits/s
Wide Ultra2 SCSI: 80MBYTES/s
Ultra3 SCSI: 80MBYTES/s
Wide Ultra3 SCSI: 160MBYTES/s
FC-AL Fiber Channel: 100-400MBYTES/s

I'm about 99% sure that the Axim is USB 1 only.

Ok I figured it was usb 1.. however why would it be taking around 7 minutes to copy 40megs worth of stuff to my ipaq's CF card then? at 1.5megs/sec it should be MUCH faster.

what kind of transfer speeds are you guys getting when copying stuff to/from your PDAs?

I'm getting roughly the same performance that you are. Is this an Axim thing or common amoung the majority of PDA's?

right now i'm using an ipaq (ordering axim shortly).. guess it's some issue with activesync? however is activesync even used when transferring your stuff via explorer? or does the pda just map a drive like any usb device? perf. seems pretty slow for usb standards (my serial mp3 player does about the same!)

If your data is on a memory card, you can always pull the card out of the Pocket PC and insert it into a memory card reader. Memory card readers are a lot faster! The same is true for digital cameras, MP3 players, or almost anything with a memory card slot. The card readers eliminate most communication bottlenecks found in the devices.
