Is Windows CE 3.0 the same as Windows Pocket PC 2002?

I have a new Ipaq 3850 and when I look under "asset viewer" it says Windows CE 3.0 under the OS heading. Are these the same operating systems? and if not can I get a free update or something? Thanks for any help and or info.:)

Win CE 3.0 is the same as Pocket PC 2002 per iPAQ phone tech support.

An OS update/upgrade is available ( I have the same unit as you) but phone tech support said "you don't really -need- to do it."

I'm told an OS upgrade can be a source of heartache so I'm ignoring it for now. It'll work great off the shelf with the native software.

Others may comment on any value they received by doing the OS upgrade.

WinCE 3.0 is the basic operating system. It is on ALL Pocket PC's running PPC 2002. PPC 2002 is the GUI, or Graphical User Interface, and has all of the built in software.

Casio has a PPC with WinCE 3.0, but does NOT use PPC 2002, it uses it's own proprietary one.

The old PPC 2000 systems used WinCE 2.something.

Take Lexs' advise and DON'T download and install the upgrade for Win2002. I did and I lost everything on it. It wouldn't boot, reboot, either hard or soft and finally I had to send it back to Compaq to be fixed. Luckily for me my IPAQ 3650 was still under warranty.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'll be following that motto from now on.

This was also confusing to me also. I have a iPAQ 3635 and found that I had Windows CE 3.0 but did not know how this related to Pocket PC 2000 or Pocket PC 2002.

I talked with over with a Compaq Tech support guy and he agreed that this was confusing as you could not tell from your PDA what you had.

Well, now you can go to http://www.cewindows.net/wce/versions.htm and determine it for yourself. The key is to find the version and build of CE your PCA has.

I also talked to the Compaq Tech support guy and he said, if it ain't broke, don't upgrade. I have found no problems running all my software with the Pocket PC 2000 software and thus will not upgrade to the 2002 version.

ok, in my asset viewer on my 3950 under version it says OS Version: Windows CE 3.0.

the documentation for the different printing software i've tried to use says that for network printing, pocket pc 2002 is required. so does windows ce 3.0 = pocket pc 2002?

See link in my note above. There is no direct corelation between Windows CE 3.0 and Pocket PC version. I have a 3635 and windows CE 3.0 version 3.0.9348 build 9616 and thus have Pocket PC 2000. Find out your version and build and use the link above to find out.

I called Compaq and they verified that there is no way to find out on your PDA. You need to use this kind of conversion table. He admitted this was confusing but what can he do?

BTW, he also said that Pocket PC 2000 was fine and not worth upgrading unless you need to (which it sounds like you might need to do if you don't have Pocket PC 2002 and need it to print).

thanks. :) apparently i do have pocket pc 2002, and my printing issue is a firewall issue.
