Thank you:confused: daddyo 12-14-2002, 11:06 AM From what I have read it is not possible to upgrade the 54x series to 2002. The next best thing to get the look an feel is to install Facelift. www.pocketfacelift.com/ alraygraham 12-27-2002, 12:12 PM Sorry, as a 548 user I wasn't thrilled to hear it either but the SH3 Machines cannot do flash upgrades. Details are at: http://bizforums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x10123d853cd9d5118ff40090279cd0f9,00.html The Jornada is still one heck of a machine but only the ARM and newer processors allow flash upgrades. alraygraham 12-27-2002, 12:20 PM I doubt this will run on a jornada 540 series. It calls for CE 2000 or 2002 OS (which is pretty stupid any machine running these should be upgradeable). daddyo 12-27-2002, 02:26 PM alraygraham I hope your not saying that Facelift won't run on the 540 series. Especially since I have been using it on my 548 for over a year now. :) alraygraham 12-27-2002, 03:08 PM Sorry, been wrong before, it's sort of a hobby, but that's what the developer's website says. I guess if you're running it on your jornada 548 it should work on mine. I'll give it a go. Incidently, do you know what's become of the Palm OS emulators that are supposed to be runnable on CE machines. Surely someone has to still have a working beta on a CF card or hard drive out there. daddyo 12-27-2002, 06:01 PM The facelift site is a bit ambiguous about all the OSs it runs on. You can download a trial version of it here. http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=3148 This is practically the only software I have ever thought was worth buying. ;) In fact it is one of only 2 software packages I own. Everything else I use is either shareware or freeware. :) The following link is to another forum that I frequent that has some screen shots from my 548 using Facelift. http://forums.pdabuzz.net/showthread.php?threadid=40380&highlight=daddyo As for PocketPalm. This link says that it is currently still under developement. http://www.pdablast.com/cgi-bin/printversion.pl?itemID=236&site=pocketpc Alpha versions located here: http://www.kodeness.com/download/index.htm daddyo 12-27-2002, 06:09 PM delete me alraygraham 12-30-2002, 07:34 AM Thanks, I couldn't find any live links last week just dead ends. I'm playing with the idea of working up a hinge fix for my 548... can't believe HP did such a shoddy job on the hinge design. You don't know of any after market fixes out there currently do you? daddyo 12-30-2002, 08:32 AM One of the plastic hinge locks on the top side of my Jornada broke about a year after I got it. I fixed it by cutting a tiny rectangular piece of spring steel from an old battery clip. The piece I cut was the same length as the original piece of plastic but about twice as wide. (about 0.150x0.2 in) Using a pair of tweezers and a soldering iron to heat this piece of steel, I melted it into the side of the Jornada case where the piece of plastic broke off. This was the easiest way I could come up with to fix it. alraygraham 12-30-2002, 10:41 AM Very resourceful grasshopper! I had tried epoxies and was reluctant to marr the case... but that was back when it looked a little fresher (and before it lost the second hinge stop). I think I'll get out the snips and soldering iron for New Years and give it a try. Have you loaded calander plus or gigabar on your 548? Those were a neat freeware find from pocketgear.com, most of my free games and software I've checked out came from them. E-books from blackmask.com and a free KJV Bible from olivetree.com are some of my other favorite freebies. pocketgear.com blackmask.com olivetree.com daddyo 12-30-2002, 01:20 PM You also have to have a steady hand to do the fix. (Although I don't and I did it. To much coffee) ;) I'm running Olive Tree's Reader version 2.20J and have the MKJV and the ASV installed. :) I actually use wisebar with Facelift instead of Gigabar. I felt that Gigabar had to many features and seemed to slow the unit down. All I wanted from wisebar was the smart minimize and battery status features, Facelift takes care of the rest of the desktop. I have Mobipocket, Palmreader, and Microsoft readers installed. I have read about 30 books this last year using the Jornada. It actually helped to get me back into reading after having cut back quite a bit over the last few years. The book sites I know of are: http://www.promo.net/pg/ www.dotlit.com http://etext.virginia.edu/ebooks/ebooklist.html http://esspc-ebooks.com/ http://gort.ucsd.edu/jj/1/book.html www.memoware.com/index.html www.ojster.com/cgi-bin2/? http://dmoz.org/Arts/Literature/Electronic_Text_Archives/ www.ppcsg.com/links.php?node=01/03/22/2004542 http://utenti.tripod.it/libridigitali/publicdomain.htm http://classics.mit.edu/ http://digital.library.upenn.edu/books/ www.lib.utexas.edu/books/etext.html www.pda-archives.com/wince/12.htm I also have media player loaded so I can listen to music when I go for my morning walk. Don :) alraygraham 12-30-2002, 01:58 PM Blackmask.com is pretty inclusive. There are hundreds of books on the site. I haven't found any books elsewhere I haven't also found there. One reader is enough. I like to leave plenty of RAM on my machine. daddyo 12-30-2002, 04:50 PM You need to get a CF card so you don't have to worry about the onboard RAM. ;) I got mine from www.newegg.com alraygraham 12-31-2002, 07:01 AM ;) I have a 128 MB Sandisk compact flash I just bought from Amazon for $39 (after $20 rebate) and was using a 64 MB before. Now I'm using it for an archive + critical backups. I find that the 548 needs some free ROM to run sharply so I try to keep at least 15 MB free. My CF card is loaded with backups, e-books, documents, MP3s and the ocassional download or project I'm taking home that won't fit in e-mail or a floppy. I tried the hinge fix and was partly successful... probably too much coffe and being a parent of two teens. The result is a little better than before but not OEM by any means. If you don't already have a compact flash reader I recommend you get one it won't take 6 minutes to transfer a 4 MB MP3 to the card like it does through the Jornada - it's almost instantaneous (but protected MP3's like my new Lord of The Ring CD's will need to be loaded into the device by ox-cart using Media player or whatever via the SH3 processor the old way). ;) PDA Street
