Hi Guys!

I currently have a Psion Revo so I don't know much about CF cards, except that you get them in different storage sizes.

My question is - are CF cards that are used for the Palm and other devices the same as that for the Psion or is there a specific CF card that I have to purchase.

To the modaraters - I did not see a forum for accessories, so I hope you don't mind me putting this question under 7Book.

Thank you
Kenny

I have moved your message into the general discussion area :)

The Psions (except Revo and Mako) use "Type I" Compact Flash cards rated at 3V or Dual Voltage, but not the older 5V cards. I don't know if some of the other devices use Type II cards, but my Jornada Pocket PC uses the same Type I card as my S5 and 5mx.

There can be compatibility problems with a specific CF card and a specific Psion so it is usually advisable to purchase from a source which will exchange the card if you do have a problem. This usually appears as a card which is not recognised.

Thanks Mike
So i should make sure that its either dual voltage or 3v as i intend on buying a series 7 this Christmas? (same as a 5mx-right?)

Any CF cards you buy new these days will almost certainly be 3V so it is really just a matter of ensuring that the particular CF card you buy works with your Series 7 (when you get it).

Sorry mike i have another question that just came to my mind.

Can one buy a CF disk reader writer for PC, ( i don't know if thats what they call them) so one can copy straight from the PC to the CF disk??

Thanks for your Help

Can one buy a CF disk reader writer for PC Yes, I have a Sandisk USB Compact Flash Reader and this is how I backup my 5mx. I copy "C" drive (internal) to a folder on "D" drive (compact flash) then put the CF card into the USB CF Reader and I can copy the whole CF disk to a folder in the PC in a matter of seconds. It is a much faster method of file transfer than PsiWin, though you still need PsiWin with the Revo.

Kennygza: You might want to look here. I brought 256MB from them and it was an excellent quick service and works well in the netbook

If you get a Series 7 or Netbook, these also take Type II Flash, these are thicker and can also be used in some of the better digital cameras. I use an 1GB IBM Microdrive so have vast amounts of storage for everything. I travel widely so have the whole (or mostly) of the UK at street level and some of Europe and Scandinavia, as well as being able to put in the camera, which is USB so can upload and download as a virtual hard drive. The only downside over the CF is being a hard drive, speeds can be slower and battery consumption a little higher. As I usually power the 7 book (I upgraded from the 7) from the car when out of the office, this for me isn't a problem. I paid £152 for the 1GB at www.scan.co.uk and it was a lot cheaper than buying a 512MB CF card and more practical for my needs, but I cannot use it in the 5mx as Mike mentioned because that only uses the smaller Type I

Hope that helps in your decisions

prices are coming down fast though, Crucial on the above link sell a 512MB CF for £138.59 + va,t free postage. I think Twinmos are even cheaper but have not tried them. The crucial card I have is considerably quicker than the microdrive.

That being said, it was the Spring and it is 1GB, not only 512MB. It is slower, I wouldn't contest that, but I would have required two 512 MB cards to do the same and that cost was prohibitive for me back then.
