I am getting a Psion Revo+ and was wondering if anyone had any tips for things i should do when i get it before i use it, or any things that would make it's set-up quick and easy

Congratulations on purchasing a great machine. With care and common sense, you will get a lot of benefit from it.

First, get on the ball about charging. You can find out all of this by reading forums and there is some good info on Kevin Millican's website. Sorry, I don't remember the URL but with a search for EPOC + ChaDis, you will bring it up. His ChaDis program is good. In a nutshell, charge the Revo before using it. Plug the mains into the back and power the machine on. It will fast charge for about 1-2 hours (red & green light on). Then it will switch to trickle charge (green light only). Charge it for about 6 1/2 hours, until the small battery icon in the toolbar (CTRL + "T" if not showing) appears to be full and stops moving. Note that if you check the battery charge by pressing SH+CTRL+P or going to "Today", it will say 100% long before it is done trickle charging. Ignore that. Don't charge the Revo again until it is around 10% charge left in it. Repeat all of the steps to charge.

Second, buy a shell hard case for it. Try www.proporta.com and look around. You will not be sorry with them as they provide an unprecedented level of protection.

Third, get freeware and shareware. www.epocsoftware.com has a load of freeware and shareware. Also, check out www.neuon.com and www.rmrsoft.com for great software (both freeware and shareware).

Enjoy and hope this helps you get started.

What operating system are using on your PC? If it's Win2K or XP, make sure you have PsiWin 2.3.3 since earlier versions won't work with these newer OS'es. Check the software section here on how to get PsiWin 2.3.3.

Do you have anything else connected to your com port now, e.g., modem, fax software, scanner, etc. If so, spend the $15 or so and buy another serial card for your PC. This will eliminate the port conflicts that usually cause most of the Revo connection problems.

Are you planning to sync to a desktop PIM like Outlook or Organizer? Make sure you make a backup copy of the data file before you do your first sync as there may be problems and it's a lot easier to fix if you have back ups.

Go to the Psion site and download any updates. The contacts sync and e-mail upgrade come to mind. If you're going to be using Organizer 5 or 6, make sure you download that also.

Let the Revo charge a good eight hours before you first use it. This will help eliminate the battery problems that some users have had.

That's about all I can think of. In most cases, things go without a hitch but write back if you have any problems.

Regards, Jim

Great solution for backing up a revo and loading files to it is to use a netbook Via IR :-) This is a wonderful combination and will really increase your psion Joy. All the best with the revo+

Mark, I think you are getting just a little bit carried away here :) The vast majority of Revo users are not going to buy a netBook so they can back up their Revo. Similarly, why would loading files from a netBook be a solution because the files need to be loaded into the netBook in the first place and this is an identical procedure to loading them into the Revo.

Until I finally bought a switch box today I used my netBook to load software onto my Revo simply because I had to scrabble about at the back of my PC to change the serial leads over. I use EpocSync to synchronise documents between the two machines and use my Revo as my out-and-about machine for when I do not have a briefcase or rucksack with me.

Out of interest, Mark (or anyone else), does anyone know of some backup software that would allow the Revo to be backed up to a CF card on my netBook via IR? It's not a major issue now that I can backup the Revo easily but it would have been handy and would also be a good stand-alone solution.

Mike: You know me and my enthusiasm to promote psion ownership and the netbook in particular to help make the world a better place :-)

<<<why would loading files from a netBook be a solution>>> It is if you are a mac user or do not have access to a PC. Also it is a lot faster and easier the PSIWIN, and if you have a netbook then you already have the files downloaded and ready to go ;-)

Wolf UK:
<<<know of some backup software that would allow the Revo to be backed up to a CF card on my netBook via IR?>>> You could ask ralph.sprenger@gmx.net who worte the great app Backup, I found him very helpful and obliging and if I remember write he recently got a netbook and probably has a revo so it could be a nice addition to his current app. Currently I just click ctrl A to select all on the revo nd have the D drive selected on my netboook with a folder called revo on it and beam across, not as neat as Ralphs app which only takes changed files and keeps archies and tests the battery first and compresses data files and and and also has an auto backup timer and and as you may have guessed I like this app. essential if you do not have a PC.

Use RMRFile ( www.rmrsoft.com , ~$20 USD) to backup to a CF on another machine via IR.

How I do it is rather simple and provides me with a lot of options. First of all, what you are doing is creating a .zip file by using RMRFile (RMRZip is also recommended but not completely necessary...). At that point, you can just add all files in a certain directory, choosing compression rates, etc. To customize, you can do a find for certain files, based on titles, apps, folders, wildcards, size, date, etc. Then add those to the .zip file. At that point, I close the .zip file and then transfer it via IR.

In my opinion it works wonderfully well. Hope this helps...

Adding files by date is a good idea since one could then create incremental backups. I guess that the only problem would be that deleted files would still be stored.

Sadly Ralph has said that he is not planning any more changed to Backup so it looks like RMRFile or RMRZip are the way forward for this.

Thanks for those suggestions brianh, I have RMRZip so will be quite easy, it might even be possible to write a macro to auto mate this process att regular intervals. I have not explored Macro5 yet but I hear it is a great program and does this sort of thing, if anyone else writes this macro I would be keen to hear it, I will geeet round to having a look at the macro program soon hopefully, these labour saving devices keep eating into my time though ;-)

Wolfuk, Oh well it was worth asking, I suppose that does not stop anyone else writing such a program though, so now the idea is out there maybe it will be developed. Hope does spring eternal in the Psion community and is often rewarded.

i'm using win98 should this be a problem? It shouldn't be a problem - I have a PC with 98SE and PsiWin 2.3.1 which works alright.

although in most circumstances win98 will not interfere with psiwin. for about a year i was disonnected because of some compatability or conflict or something. there may be a small problem but diem's website's instructions can help if there is a comflict. try unistalling serial devices if there is a problem.
cheers and good luck
