All of a sudden, my pda refuses to add/remove programs automatically through ActiveSync 3.5. This was working well all along. The error message is "Unable to retrieve mobile device information. Please reconnect and try again." Of course, I do accordingly but it dosn't help. Besides, synchronizing is OK, file exploring/transferring is OK, backup to desktop PC is OK ...
Attempt to reinstall the MS Activesync on desktop but after unpacking the files, the program refuses to move further as an error message appears "Need tcp/ip protocol on this computer ... please install protocol". I can log on to internet via dial up service, retrieve my emails through MS Outlook, surf the net, post this message to this board ... so I don't think tcp/ip protocol is absent on this computer!
My desktop is running Windows XP.
Are these two problems related?
Expert help would be highly appreciated. This is frustrating. Your help/advice/opinions are greatly needed, please.

As I read numerous boards on the Internet I am finding out that many people are having problems with XP and ActiveSync.
One thing you can do is make sure you have the latest XP patch / update.
I had a similar problem as you, but all I did was unplug my USB sync/charge cable. I moved it to another USB port on my Desktop and resynched. As I did so XP "told" me that a "new" USB device was detected. It then "installed" the correct drivers for it.
That fixed the problem.

At work, I've seen a similar situation a lot.
We're locked down, so the average client doesn't have Administrator privelage's. Once ActiveSync is installed - the end-user is not allowed to install additional apps on the PocketPC.
Since you said you can synchronize data, and get on internet from computer - I'd wonder if it's the Administrator Privelage's. Can you install regular PC apps, or are they blocked?
At work - the solution is to only allow company authorized applications on the work computer. The end-user's can install anything they want on their home personally owned computers, and synchronize there. (sounds harsh, I know)

Hi,
Thanks for the reply, I have all the admin rights :-( I can do everything on the PC and the IPAQ except loading new programs. Yesterday, I have tried to fix Avango and out of suden, a program installation started and worked but since then I can't add new programs anymore!

I realize this is an old thread but I was wondering if anyone ever found a solution. I was issued a PPC as a company phone a couple of months ago and I have this problem.
I'm using Activesync 4.2 on Windows XP Pro with SP2. I have full administrator priviliges on my PC. I can connect, sync, browse/explore files, and manually transfer the CAB files and install from within the PPC, but when I try to install programs on my PPC from my PC it says "Unable to retrieve the mobile device information. Please reconnect and try again."
I have tried different USB ports, uninstalling/reinstalling Activesync, and all the other suggestions I have seen but the problem still persists. Does anyone know what causes this? Thanks

Try soft-reset the pda first then run the install again.
