I've learned of an alternative ssh option than mindterm at http://sourceforge.net/projects/syossh/

This is in alpha stage, but it seems to work o.k. for remote logins.

Comparing sysossh to mindterm, I find that syossh works much more quickly than mindterm - e.g., listing directories, opening pine. It would seem that the sluggishness of mindterm has nothing to do with ethernet, but perhaps more to do with java inefficiency.

I suspect that opera has the same issue - it gets the data fairly quickly from the internet, but then is sluggish in displaying it, perhaps because of java.

The logic doesn't follow I'm afraid. Whilst Mindterm is fully a Java application, and is therefore affected by the speed of the JVM, Opera is a native EPOC application. Its only use for the JVM is to run Java applets on web pages that you visit - these will be slowed by the performance of the JVM.

Things become clearer with Opera...complicated webpages (e.g. the nytimes.com) that presumably have java things running take a long time to load, while simple web pages (e.g. data only)) load quickly. So I'm thinkin' that java is still the issue... I've turned off java for Opera and
things work a little faster. Now if only Opera would stop crashing when I try to read the nytimes.... :(
