Personally I bought an Enterasys Roamabout from eBay. The cards with the best support are no longer current range, so it will become harder to buy one from new. All I can suggest is to read the now quite extensive info on the WiFi subject in my FAQ, and then go searching for a card from my compatibility list.

I also purchased a Roamabout off eBay - works really well.

Another possible source is companies doing upgrades to one of the newer WiFi formats or laptops with built-in WiFi. I just picked up a used Orinocco (sp?) Gold card (bent and scratched, but working) for $15 as a back-up. :D

I can now add a new WiFi card to the list the 7Book supports. I'm using it now. The card is Lucent Hermes chipset based and supports WEP at 128 bit, it has a low profile antennae and does not block the stylus hole. For those concerned with aesthetics the antennae is also a perfect shade of black/gray. Downside is that it's a 5V card but the ACPI power management appears to work although according to the box and specs it shouldn't. This card is an OEM variant of the Avaya/Lucent/Orinoco Gold cards.

The card is made by Buffalo Technology (Buffa******nology.com but poor links through the website make it hard to find). Part number is WLI-PCM-L11GP-3. Best bit is it has a 2 year (maybe 3 yr, I forget) warranty and it's available from www.dabs.com (UKbased) for less than 49 pounds including VAT and delivery. Mine took 2 days to arrive.

For information I'm using it with a Dlink 614+ base station which supports 802.11b (11Mbs) and 802.11b+ (22MBs). I am getting the full 11MB performance.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Jezza,

This is useful info - would you mind if I asked for a little more? Could you post the FCC ID (should be on the underside of the card somewhere) and the OS revision that your machine originally come with (751, 754 or 756)?

TIA

Sure, I knew I would miss including something.

FCC ID is IMRWLPCE2411R - this appears to be a slight variant (last few chars) of the Orinoco gold cards.

Buffalo Technology name it an AirStation PC Card, and I've already provided their model number (note they do two versions, normal and slimline - the latter being the one I purchased).

My Series 7 was a 756 build originally.

Also, the card is one of the seemingly few that supports an additional attenae being added to increase transmission range.

And finally, the NetStatRF utility appears to work perfectly with the card reliably reporting it's performance and functions.

It does indeed work well and was a very straightforward setup (just like the Dlink card in my Laptop)

I don't mind assisting anyone with the specific settings if they experience any difficulty.

Sounds like you've found the holy grail of Netbook/WLAN owners!

Anybody purchasing one of these Buffalo Airstation cards needs to ensure that they get the slimline version of the card. The normal card appears to be the same as any other Orinoco based card.

Wonder if the RF performance of the slimline card suffers, due to the smaller internal aerial ?

Note to moderators - this is yet another thread that would be *very* interesting to 'normal' Netbook owners, who might not normally view this board !
