Ok.. i'm leaning towards ordering the 300mhz version with the cradle.. doing some price comparisons it's gonna cost me over $160cdn more to get the 400mhz over the 300. is there any real reason I should get the 400? I mean having the extra ram is good, but with CF and SD expansion it's not that big a deal (lots of apps will let you install on your storage rather than in ram). Is it really worth it?

All depends on your usage. Having more RAM is definitaly more useful if you're a Power user. If you're an everyday user who just plays mp3s, word, excel...etc, then save yourself the $160cdn and use the money to buy accessories.
yeah.. well i'll most likely do the usual stuff for sure (calendar, contacts etc..) plus prolly load a few games, mp3s for sure, maybe some videos. I'm thinkin the 300 will suit me fine.

redi,
That was my same line of thinking and I went with the 300. It's not here yet but I'm sure it will be more than I need. From what I'm reading there isn't a lot of performance difference from the 300 to the 400, just the extra memory. Some people claim that the lack of extra ROM could limit your OS upgrading in the future but like has been pointed out, the new Ipaq has only 16mb of ROM. Also, by the time the OS needs updating, something newer, faster, and, if Dell has any say, cheaper. For the extra money I would have spent, I'll put it towards a GPS unit or some extra memory cards.

I remember back in the 80's, I bought a 286 (anyone remember those?). I thought, "why should I buy a 386 when the 286 is less money and seems just as fast?" The problem is, everything changes so quickly. My 286 didn't last long and I wished I would have spent the extra $$ and bought the 386.
If the 400 is available, I would go for it. Next year, you'll be glad you did.

Lakersdude... i disagree....by next year both will be useless. Let me tell u about microsoft stuff... I've had 4 different PDAs in the last 4 years... By next year microsoft will have a whole new setup and everyone's gonna go on ebay, sell their PDAs and by the new ones... I bought my 206mhz pda early in the year and we're already at 400mhz...

I tend to agree with gamoooos. I went with the 300 and keep wondering if I should have just spent the extra on the 400, but I am yet to find anything I can't do with mine. A friend at work ordered the 400 today so I'll be able to compare side by side but so far I couldn't be happier.

Each to his own, but I always feel that "if" the better technology is out there, buy it. It will obviously be outdated in a year, but with a 400 you will only be one step down, with a 300 you're already two steps behind the game. I'm sure the 300's are great machines, however.

I'm definitely and advocate for buying the best you can at the time to avoid super-obsoletion. I have the 400MHz and hope to make it last until I buy the next one. I do, however, keep the CPU set to Auto for power consumption reasons, so most of the time I'm only running at 200MHz. If I ever need more processing speeds, I can simply crank it all the way up to 400.
My purchasing rule:
Always buy the second from the top, unless there are only two, then buy the top.
I think i'll stick with the 300 then. ;)

Good discussion; I basically share the view of gamoooos.
My 300 should arrive today. The PDA it replaces is around 16-18 months old, and speed ain't why I'm replacing it.

I think it is unanimous! The people who bought the 300's are happy and the people who bought the 400's are happy. What more could we ask for at Christmas?
woohoo ..just placed my order .. got the 300 with the usb cradle. can't wait!

Yeah, Lakersdude, everyone is happy :)
I ordered the cradle with the 300 too, redi. For some, the configuration is a good compromise between the two Axim offerings.

I went with the 300 with cradle, and then added a 64MB CF card and am perfectly happy. I'm not a power user, mostly Contacts, Notes, Appts., Excel, and a few games and extra utilities.
I also have the processer set to Power Save, so it runs at 200Mhz, and I don't really see a difference between 200 and 300, though I don't use much video or other processor intensive apps.
