I need to set up my NEC Mobile to access the internet via a GSM phone. I understand that there is a registry edit that is required to make the IR port appear as a COM port.

Does anyone know how to do this or where I can get the information?

Thanks.

I have been able to use my Nokia 8890 with my Jornada 728 via IRDA. From past experience I have found that each cell phone brand and often each model is built in proprietary software and you need to check prior to purchasing the phone if that phone has drivers that work with your CE. I used to own a 680 and used an old Erricson I888 phone and had to use a third party company "softradius" to connect to that irda port. then when I upgraded to a 720 the irda was not compatible so I cancelled phone service with mci and switched to cingular wireless with their Nokia phones. For my Nokia and cingular I also had to subsribe to their data service of 4.95 a month. Most issues are becuase of the cell phone and since they typically subsidize phones with new plans, I would suggest bringing your Ce device and testing it with the phone to make sure it is compatible.

YOU MAY REALLY WANT TO SEARCH THE OLD MESSAGE BOARDS UNDER YOUR BRAND (nec) TO SEE IF THERE IS ALREADY A POSTING FOR THIS ISSUE, AS THIS IS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF A DEVICE SPECIFIC POSTING THAT ONLY A PERSON OWNING THAT BRAND WOULD LIKELY BE ABLE TO PROPERLY ANSWER. I AM ONE OF MANY WHOM ARE WILLING TO SHARE THEIR INFO BUT AM LIKELY TO LEAVE THIS SITE AS THEIR PREVIOUS 24+ FORUMS ARE GONE AND EVEN AFTER REPEAT SUGGESTIONS SEEM CONFIDENT THAT ALL WILL BE HAPPY WITH THESE GENERALIZED FORUMS.
