I'm thinking about buying an Axim X5 400....
1)Does anyone have any complaints about it's size? Some reviews say it's very bulky and it cannot fit into pockets.
2)Are Outlook & Adobe pre-installed on the unit? If not is it available as a download?
Thanks,
Ken

I highly recommend the Axim, I love mine! The size is no big deal really, I was really worried about it to before I got my hands on one. It is smaller than my old handspring visor neo. Outlook does come pre-installed, but adobe does not. You can download it directly from oadobe...it is free. Microsoft has put out their own document viewer, which does com installedd, but I have not taken the time to learn it.

I love mine as well, but I would wait if I were you. There are some unresolved issues with the units that are currently shipping. People are reporting problems with the navigation button (like me who is already getting a replacment sent to me for a faulty one). I know there is no new product in the world that gets relesed with out some problems. I would recommend you wait at least 3 months to see if they work out some of the problems. Other pocket PC manufacturers are also currently lowering there prices so look out for that too.

Thanks for the reply aj. I'm not really in a rush to get a PDA, I think I'll take your advice and wait a little. I'm also looking at the new iPac 1910. It also just came out...I'm watching to see how it does.

I have also heard rumors that sometime in early 2003, Dell will be releasing at least one additional more powerful Axim. I own the 400, so I'm not too worried, but the 300s out there should be wiery of becoming obsolete. :) Just kidding. These things are great.

Just to update you....I got my replacement Axim today for the one with the faulty D-pad. The new one has a great d-pad, perfectly center, no mushy feel, clicks the same in all direction. One minor problem though, the touch screen is bad! I am sending both of them back. So I would DEFINATLY wait to get a Axim If I were you.

I haven't heard about too many problems with the touchpad. Anyone else experiencing the same thing?

Sorry to hear about the problems with the touch screen, aj. I'm definately going to wait a couple more weeks, at least, before buying a X5.
Have a great holiday!

A few people have been reported the problem with the touchpad. I'm aware that Dell knows about this problem.

What is the difference between Secure Digital Memory Card and Compact Flash Card? Is one better/faster than the other?
Thanks

The biggest difference in cd and sd is the size followed by the price. But the price gap is quickly closing.
Otherwise no major difference in speed or data transfer rates.
The reason there are two slots on the Dell Axim X5 is so that the user has more expandability options without having to pay for wireless options up front. CF memory is cheaper right now but you can also buy many different types of devices that will work in a CF slot (wlan, modem, vga video card adapter, etc.), thus the sd card slot can be used for memory storage while the cf slot is being used for something else.
IMHO this is one of the main reasons the dell is going to be such a hit ( besides the transflective screen and the price). Not too many pocket pc's have both slots available or if they do they don't yet have a transflective screen.
The only ones I can think of that have both slots are the toshiba e740 and the genio e550. but neither of these units have a transflective display and will cost you quite a bit more.
The ipaq's of late come with only a sd slot built in but you can add a cf sleeve for another 40 to a 100$ depending on which type.
Hope this helps.
