Hi, all!! Bought a new e740 a couple days ago... just got the wireless networking up and running for about 15 minutes, then suddenly it didn't work anymore. Attempts to start the wireless adapter from the icon fails (LED doesn't come on, just get a single beep). Attempts to run the WLU prompts a "turn on the wireless comm switch", even tho the switch is already on. Power Saving is already turned off. Tried numerous soft and hard resets. Wireless access point works fine (laptop access is flawless).

Please tell me this isn't a device failure. Not a good sign for a new pda... :) Is there any way to force a reset of the wireless adapter?? Some software utility that'll do it??

Hoping for good news,
Steve

Steve,
I have experienced a similar problem, if not the same problem. I will be doing fine with the 802.11b... able surf the internet and all. Then, later, after I've not been using the e740 for a while, I come back to it, power it up and the 802.11b isn't working. This does not happen all the time. But it has happened quite a few times. It is just like you described, try to turn it on by tapping on the 802.11b icon on the task bar and it starts to come up, light comes on, but only for half a second and it is shut down again.

I have been able to restore it back to a functional state again by killing the power to the machine by turning the battery switch off, and then restoring the power again. It goes through the original set up routine. The same one that it went through when you first turned it on the very first time.

DO NOT DO THIS WITHOUT BACKING UP YOUR MACHINE!

You will lose all your stuff when the power is cut off. I routinely back-up my files/programs to a Secure Digital card. I leave the 802.11b switch on when I do this. When it powers up again it goes through the setup for the 802.11b and I enter my SID to get connected again. I then restore my backed-up settings and everything seems to be peachy for a while.

Hi there,

It might seem stupid, but please check that your wireless LAN switches are on. There are two switches one on the hardware and one in the software. The first one is activated by the jumper next to the reset button and AC/DC plug. The software switch is done by clicking on the icon which is on top in the middle. Click this button and answer "YES" to the "Wireless LAN?" question.

Best regards,
Lorenz Bogaert

I experienced a similar problem. Only that the PDA hangs when I turn the wireless button on. Soft and hard reset did not work. I called toshiba technical support and was told that the pda is defected and return it.

When I turn WEP off, the system seems to always work. With WEP on, it usually doesn't work... I just see the wireless link light flashing on my newer Linksys WAP11 router.

The other thing I notice is that the WEP entry procedure only seems to work the first time you bring the screen up... when you've already entered a value (ASCII or HEX) you can't seem to get the apply button to work, and I'm pretty sure that the return button on the keyboard isn't making the changes take effect.

Yes sir, lots of little bugaboos with the E740 and PocketPC OS in general... it "ALMOST" makes me miss my old Palm M100 - I never had any of these little bugaboos with that unit... But, the fact is, I'm developing with C# with Microsoft's VS.NET/Compact Framework Beta - so a lot of the idiosyncrasies I'm coming across are from that side of the house.

... and for the poster who asked "Did you turn the Wireless switch on"? Yes - of course we did.... so I ask that poster - did you turn WEP on? If not, that may explain why you aren't seeing this problem. Another poster on another forum said the problem might also have something to do with getting the flash upgraded on the Linksys router... I'll try that angle when I get a chance, and see if it helps any - But, for now, I'm forced to run with WEP off:eek:
