Does anybody know whether it is possible to use AOL's Instant Messaging service without being a paying member of AOL? i.e. can I get an AIM account for free? If so, how? If not, is there any other service through which it is possible to get free instant messaging client and account? (Most of the EPOC client programs - e.g. Yahoo, MSN, ICQ, IRC - seem to come at a price, except for the AOL Java client which is free - hence my first question)

Not that I'm cheap or anything, you understand ;) , just wanted to know if there's a free option...

I'm not totally sure I understand this question - you certainly do not need to be an AOL member to sign up for an AIM account. I use AIM regularly on PC without being a subscriber.

However, the only way I know of using it on the netBook is the Java client - in theory - I've never managed to get it to work! Same with the Yahoo and ICQ Java versions. I'd be interested to know if you've had any success with those.

Currently I use Ruksun's MSN Messenger Force (shame they don't do AIM any more) and Neuon's nICQ. Neither is free, unfortunately, but both are pretty reliable. I have found them to be worth the cost. A friend of mine is looking into a different way of using ICQ - not sure what - I will post here if I find anything out.

Apologies again if I've misunderstood what you are asking.

Thanks for that. I didn;t realise AIM was free to sign up. I will have another look at the AOL web site to see how to sign up.

I think it DID used to be members only, in the dim distant past, but not any more. Sign up should be pretty straightforward.

Let me know if you get it working on the Psion, or if you need a "partner" for testing, e-mail or PM me and I'll let you have my ID.

By the way, I managed to get the Yahoo messenger JAva client up and running, the window appeared inside Opera, but then when I tried to send a message nothing happened... has anybody got any further with Yahoo's Java client?

Hello All

I've purchased Ruksun's Aim Messenger eons ago - from what I remember it work great to a certian extent - what I mean is that their has never been a problem login in and communicating (both sending and receiving) however after 5 transfer of messeges (message going out is 1 - message comming in is 2 & so on ..ect...) I had to log back in - I remember that all to well because I tried to get that corrected with Ruksun, and their response was it was out of their control because AIM uses some special proxy or protocal thing-of-ma-gig (whatever)

I only purchase it to communicate with my son from the road to find out what friends house I was to pick him up at - usually when he was at someones house chances were good that he was on AIM - so it gave me enough time to have him tell me where he was, and for me to response when I would be there. (I always thought IM is rather stupid anyway when a phone was in hand) Now that he has a cell phone out with that IM idea BUT.........
he uses IM on his cell phone so much that he kept going over his amount so his montly bill was insane ..... So .......... I took that away ......... I guess i will try AOL Messenger again .........will let u all know how it works again ........... It's been a long time now I know I have the program somewhere

Good Day Donald

MSN works GREAT with MSN2GO (only for Psion 7, Netbook, MBook). Just look at this (http://blog.garethjmsaunders.co.uk/archives/2005/09/25/msn-for-psion/) link
