I found on this forum some info about upgrading my tired Mobilon HC-4600 batteries by cracking open the case and installing new ones. The batteries came yesterday, and I installed a couple of sets today.

I bought the batteries from batteriesamerica.com for $5.50 each plus shipping. Two are required for each pack, and some experience soldering is helpful.

I used a butane pencil-type soldering iron and some small-diameter acid core solder.

These batteries are 2700 mAh while the originals were 2400 mAh, so I should get longer life than when new.

If anyone's interested I can e-mail the Word document with the instructions and pictures. It's 400K so it's too big to attach to this message.

Two things I recomend doing different in soldering your batterys.

1) DO NOT use Acid core solder on electronics, EVER!!!.
It is intended for plumbing and can/will corrode your electronics. Use ROSIN core solder on all electrical and electronic soldering.

2) An electric soldering pencil is easer for new users and much cheaper ($10) than gas powered ones. You can get one at any Radio Shack, Department Stores like Wal-Mart and Hardware Stores.
(All these places sell Rosin core solder as well.)

By pure dumb luck, my Sharp 4600 battery has held up - until now...

I'd appreciate a copy of your instructions for rebuilding the battery pack. My email is captainwebb@ntlworld.com

Many thanks.

I have seen them on eBay selling for about $15 for new batterys. Some sellers even give you one of the backup batterys too.

I do not think that anyone who does not already know how to install new cells in a case would be able to do it for less than the cost of a new battery.

The cost of the equiptment ( assuming you dont already have it) and the new cells will cost you more than a new battery sells for.

I got 2 main batterys and one memory battery for $30 including shipping from a seller on eBay, and they claimed to have hundreds more of them.

Does anyone have the rebuilding instructions in Word format? Perhaps Ken no longer reads this thread.

Tam's message would be interesting, but I live outside North America. Amazon (which has replacement batteries for sale) will not ship electronics kit to Britain. I don't know about the eBay items mentioned; they don't show up on a search at present.

Does anyone know of another source? If not, rebuilding is just about the only option.

Thanks.

Not sure if the url will work...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5715945796&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT

if not search for "Sharp Mobilon HC-4600 Battery" with eBay search.
Or look up the vendor, there id is "gearmicro"
I have ordered several things from them so far and have had no problems.

If all else fails I will make up a detailed set of instructions that anyone should be able to follow and post it here or email to whom ever needs it.

It still looks like no-one will ship Mobilon batteries from the US to England.

If anyone has a working battery they care to sell (and mail) privately, I'm interested.

Otherwise, I'd really appreciate those rebuild instructions.

Without knowing just what you have done it is hard to say.
I would double check all your connections and make sure you have the cells wired correctly.

Did it charge the old cells or did the light just blink?

This is a link to a current seller on eBay.
Seller "GearMicro inc"

or search eBay for "Mobilon Battery"

Sorry, I haven't had a Mobilon for a few years, so I haven't been here. I got an e-mail from PDA street that someone had replied to one of my posts.

I do still have the battery replacement instructions if anyone wants them. Just send an e-mail to me at kenhanawalt@hotmail.com and I'll attach the file to my reply.

I already sent it to Housecatjr so he/she also should have a copy. Good luck!
