Problems with hotsync on zire

I just bought my first handheld and i am trying to install and hotsync. When i installed the palm desktop it requested a username and then when i try to hotsync it request my username. When i input user name it states the user name is
illegal and will not let me finish. What am i doing wrong?
I have uninstalled and reinstalled to see if i missed something.

Try creating a new username in Palm Desktop (upper right corner), and hotsync afterwords and try selecting the newly created username...
