Hard vs soft case

Is a hard case or a soft case safer in protecting from a fall?
After my SJ30 fell 3 feet onto a hardwood floor and chipped a corner while in a soft case, I got a hard case which I assumed was more protection. A friend asked me, though, if the soft case would actually provide more cushioning. Any thoughts or real-life experiences?

This is an idea i doubt anyone has thought of, but wouldn't it be the best to put the pda in a hard case and then put it into a soft case? Most of the hard cases are just as big as the pda so they should fit right in the soft case. If a pda in a hard case drops from 3 feet there would be no protection agiasn't shock and the parts inside could get jumbled badly. A soft case falling from 3 feet would absorb the shock but apparently it's not the best either. So if you put the pda in a hard case and then into a soft case wouldn't that protect the pda better, guard the outside more and provide cushion? Just an idea that popped into my head.
