Hey, maybe I can be of some assistance here, tho I highly doubt it =)
If you have installed the Palm Desktop software, when you look at your "Taskbar" you may see a symbol which resembles a yin-yang, but using two arrows (one red and one blue). if you right click on that, if will show you the way you have selected to communicate with your palm from these choices: Serial, USB, Modem,or Network. Is it posible that yours is checked next to USB and you are really trying to connect through serial? Or even vice-versa? If this is the case, you can change your selection and tryo to hotsync again. I am just curious because I have had this happen to me before. Maybe a pro will come along and give you a hand now =)

PS: I know you checked the serial connection for the cradle on the PC, but check one more time.

Having similar probs hot syncing a Vx to a dell computer. All settings have been checked and re-checked. Upgraded palm os from 3.5 to 3.5.3. Upgraded palm desktop also. Still no fix. Because the dell was under warranty, they replaced the motherboard. Palm sync'ed for about 2 weeks and then stopped. Discovered that there's a lawsuit out there against palm because the metal case of the Vx generates static electricity that fries the pc port. Also, tried using a usb kit as recommended by palm - didn't fix it. Palm is now sync'ing to another computer and that seems to work fine. But it won't work on the dell.

Still problems with hot sync! I upgraded palm os to 4.1. Also upgraded palm desktop. That seemed to make a difference. Palm again sync'ed for a week and stopped again. I am so frustrated with this thing! I'm a clie owner myself with no problems. But I've inherited this Vx issue because of job duties at work. Anyone who can help, please -

I have similar problems -- I was able to hotsync in com port 1 for about 2 weeks, and then switched to com port 2 when com port 1 stopped working. Now I can't hotsync to either port. I have a metal case. However, I have tested both ports and both appear to be working. I am able to hotsync to other computers, and am able to use my cradle successfully at other computers.

Does anyone have any other leads?

Here is a link to a method of testing COM ports.

I had the same hotsync problem about 18 mos. ago. After MUCH troubleshooting, chatting w/ Palm & Dell techs I finally determined that static buildup had blown the circuit on the motherboard for the port (Dell was kind enough to replace my motherboard for free, twice!). The problem occurs when you place the Palm V into the cradle - even a small buildup of static electricity that is nearly indiscernible to your fingers can be discharged thru the handheld, thru the cradle & into the MB.

I fixed this problem by getting a grounded anti-static mat that sits on the floor beneath my feet & chair. No problems since then.

Good luck.

The anti static mat is a great idea for all handheld users.

Wonder why this is more of an issue with Dell than other computers?
Perhaps we will never know.
