My first post here!

I just got hosed by buying my first 770 in "excellent condition" on Ebay. The keyboard is defective such that, for example, when I type a "a" , what appears on the screen is "fa". When I type "f", I get "fa". When I type "L" it enters the letter behing the previous characer on the screen. All sorts of weid stuff like that. Any ideas on how I can fix it or is it just a gonner?

Also, my right hinge anchor is broken off (see picture at http://www.geocities.com/mitch_blimp/nec770.html ) you folks seem to know what you are talking about and I hope you can help!

Thanks,

Mike

This is typical behavior of keyboard that had gotten wet -- even just a couple of drops of some fluid will do it. If you were getting double-letters that are right next to each other on the QWERTY keyboard, I would say that you much have some dirt or crumbs or something under that that's causing both keys to activate you press one, but "A" is pretty far away from "F" for that to be happening. If you're electronically handy (and a little daring), you can always take apart the base and look at the keyboard to see if there's any fluid residue or something that could be causing some signals to be crossed. You may also want to check the keyboard ribbon connection inside and try reseating the connection or even reclamping the ribbon. Again, this is at your own risk and I would only do it if you felt capable.

Otherwise, you may want to look into some of the keyboards that pop up for sale on eBay from time to time. Most of these keyboard parts are new, but since NEC is probably about to stop supporting the MP770 soon, there will be a glut period of parts for it on places like eBay. If you don't feel capable of changing out the keyboard yourself, you can always just take your MP770 and the keyboard part to a local computer/electronics shop and they will probably do it for you at minimal cost.

On the hinge cover, I think you're just going to have to lump it. I doubt you'll be able to get the part, unless the seller finds it and ships it to you.

Bum deal on the bad experience with eBay -- they're a great source for used MobilePros. If the seller doesn't make good with you, I would definitely report them as a deadbeat seller to eBay and leave negative feedback on their profile. Feel free to email me directly if you don't know how to do this. Also, if you used an official eBay method of paying (as in NOT PayPal or check or money order, etc.), you can sometimes get you money back directly from eBay and then the eBay goes after the seller to get their money back.
