Hi,
I'm in the process of purchasing a Axim X5. I heard it was the best unit out there. The pocket PC is new to me, and I'm not sure exactly how it works. My main reason for buying the X5 is to surf the web, when I'm not at home.
Please expain, in detail, what I will need to surf the web away from home. Also, will I need some additional stuff to connect to my cellphone?
I appreciate any information anybody might have. Thanks!

Oh yeah, you are gonna need some additional gear. Big things are memory cards. At least get 128 or better yet 256 memory cards Good for holding games movies, etc. while away from home Depending upon how you want to surf the web away from home, there are several items which might be needed. If your cell phone has IR on it, you may be able to use the Axims IR port to surf the web. If not, you may need a connecting cable. If you are thinking of dialing in, through a modem, you can get one for the Axim from just about anywhere including Best Buy for about $60 you are looking for a CF modem like a Targus or Ambicom (both work, the Targus is $10 cheaper). If you are talking Wireless networking, you will need a service provider (T-mobile for Starbucks, there are others like Boingo and wayport, but you must be in an area served by them), and an 802.11b WiFi CF card for your Axim. CF=CompactFlash.

You need some kind of GPS card to go into the Compact Flash slot. I forget the exact name of the GPS technology, but its the same type of technologie found in a cellphone, so you would most likely have to sign up with a cell phone company for internet access. I don't know all the details, but i'm pretty sure you wont have to do anything to your cell phone, it doesn't really have anything to do with the ppc.

If you get a wireless network card, i heard a McDonalds in Massilon, OH was the first to offer free WAP.(At least i think its free) and more are to follow. :D And... if your school or work offers a wireless network, you could mouch off them

I do have a question having to do with this as i am in the same boat...

Can somebody recomend some good plans? Anyway get a discount if i use the same provider as my cell phone(Verizon). And anyone know of a good pay as you go plan?
