I just purchased my first PDA (the Palm m505) and i was wondering what programs would help me the most? What are the essentials?

That will depend, first and foremost, on what you want to accomplish. Some possible ideas.
1. If you want to word process, try Wordsmith (http://www.bluenomad.com). When used with a Palm keyboard, this becomes a pretty full featured word processor that integrates very nicely with MS Word on the desktop.
2. HanDBase is a very nice database program with many applications already available. http://www.ddhsoftware.com
3. Spreadsheets are a bit of a problem. The spreadsheet in DocsToGo is passable, but I'm waiting for a better piece of software. http://www.dataviz.com
4. If reading the news or other magazines, etc., during a commute is something you would like, consider setting up a free account with Avantgo (http://www.avantgo.com). I get the BBC, The Economist, Business Week, New York Times, and Wall Street Journal delivered to my PDA every day.
5. If you like to golf, Intelligolf Birdie Edition (http://www.intelligolf.com) makes a scorecard for the Palm. You can download numerous courses, get the distances for each hole, track your scores and success with hitting the greens, etc. Note that this is not a GPS.
6. Vindigo provides you with updated information regarding "what's happenning" in your town. Theatre, concerts, bar scene, movies, museums, etc.
In short, step 1 is to determine what you want to do. There may well be something already programmed that will help you do it.
