Ok... I have the 400mhz 48/64 Axim. I have some files stored on a SD card, the rest are in My Documents. The My documents folder resides in RAM and thus the items in it take up RAM. There is also a "Built-In Storage" under "My Device" While empty, it claims to have 21.24 megs avail. I'm assuming that this 21.24 is actually the so-called ROM, or really, the part that isn't used up housing the OS and pre-installed programs. I can copy files to the "Built in Storage" just like I can copy them to my SC or CF card.

Am I correct here? Is there any downside to storing thngs in the Built-In Storage rather than the RAM? I can see the upside is that you have more useable space.

No downside to storing programs/files in built-in storage except that some programs will not run correctly when installed to the built-in storage (AvantGo, for example, the reason being that it also needs to copy files to the Windows directory, which is in RAM, so the whole program probably needs to be in RAM). Most programs should work from built-in storage, though.

If you do a hard reset, however, you'll need to remember to empty your built-in storage and re-install those programs because the built-in storage is not reset like RAM is. This makes the built-in storage a good place to store back-ups (they will still be there after a hard reset).

Carefull when writting to your ROM. Putting your back up there is good, if it is not too big and not done constantly. There could be a problem with constantly modifying your ROM, which is flash. Burnout?????

It's possible to damage your ROM by putting things there? Ouch?

Look at it this way, A block of clay is your flash ROM. The OS that came with your Ax is 60% of that block, And it is impressed into the clay. Good sculpture of OS. You start meshing the remaining 40%, evetually you start meshing your OS sculpture. I only did two back ups (changes) on my ROM, today I have SD RAM. Have not had a problem with any preinstalled programs.
