Garmin Belgian Topo map

Deliverable since today at Soft Solutions for 90 eur incl VAT.
It really is a Garmin compatible topo map of complete Belgium in French or Dutch. Downloadable to a Garmin GPS with at least 8MB map memory.
info on: http://www.garmin.be/NL/producten/topomap.htm.

Pretty cool!

Does this map 'mix-in' with existing map material? For example, I can have the regular maps for Netherlands and Luxemburg, but these topo maps for Belgium and still route across them?

I'll try to test this on my iQue asap.

Michel,

they do mix in perfectly. But as with all MapSource products there is always a mapset that gets priority. So when the CS map is active it gets displayed. When you disable it and the topo map is available it is diplayed instead.
Routing is only possible with CS maps, with the topo maps there is no autorouting because the required data is not available in these maps.

Re: Garmin Belgian Topo map

Can you say approximately how many square kilometers you get for 8 MB? Maybe it corresponds to one Belgian topo map paper sheet?

Bwahaha! Now THAT is funny! Why would you need that for?! It's completely flat! They highest point must be a passing of two highways :)

Joking aside, can you route on the std. mapset and then switch to the topo map to plot the route over the over topo map (on the iQue, that is)?

II00I00I 06-10-2004 10:01 AM

Belgium complete is 47 MB, so 1/6th of Belgium would be 8 MB.

I think you can calculate a route on the CS maps and then de-activate them and during routing show the topo maps. But I'm not sure about this.

Op onze kaarten is wel wat meer te zien dan alleen maar hoogtelijnen......

Toch?!?!

;)

Yeah, you're right stephanpls. A lot of interesting stuff can be seen on the map. From the screendump:
  • Cemetary, Chapel, Tower, Castle, Chruch, Pole
  • Rock, Steep rock
  • Path, Waterway, Way (baan?)
  • The type of trees in the forrest, all the height-lines, etc.
Goodness! Talk about detail!

Another question II00I00I (sorry to bother you, getting all excited here): as you can't route on the topo map, I assume you have to point to a POI on the topo maps, make it a waypoint and route to that waypoint over the CS maps? Or is the topo POI database somehow merged with the CS POI database?

gr. Michel

What about the calibration precision of those Belgian maps in the iQue? I mean if you are physically on a specific spot with your iQue, for instance a road crossing, is the iQue triangle put exactly on that crossing or is there any (significant) deviation (while the iQue positioning precision is good)?
