Thanks for VitaminB and jmounts for finding the pieces to this puzzle!
It turns out that the 7100 can be used on T-Mobile as a GPRS modem for a computer by using the USB cable. Here's how to configure it:
1. The 7100 must be connected to the computer by USB cable and the BB desktop manager must be turned on.
2. Verify the modem settings. In the Control Panel open the Phone & Modem Options. On the modems tab, you should see a new Standard Modem on a new port (mine is COM11). Click Properties: Diagnostics: Query Modem. You should see the following:
Quote:
ATQ0V1E0 - OK
AT+GMM - BlackBerry IPmodem
AT+FCLASS=? - OK
AT#CLS=? - OK
AT+GCI? - OK
AT+GCI=? - OK
ATI1 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI2 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI3 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI4 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI5 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI6 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI7 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
3. Click Properties: Advanced and add the following Extra initialization commands:
Quote:
AT+cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.voicestream.com","",0,0
4. Close the Phone and Modem Options and the Control Panel. Create a new connection with Start: Connect To: Show all connections: Create a new connection.
Quote:
1. Connect to the Internet
2. Set up my connection manually
3. Connect using a dial-up modem
4. Check only the Standard Modem
5. Give the connection a name such as "T-Mobile GPRS via BB7100 USB"
6. The phone number is *99#
7. Connection for Anyone's use, or not.
8. Leave the username and passwords blank. Uncheck make this the default Internet connection.
9. Click Finish
5. Give it a try. It should dial and connect in just a couple of seconds.
If these instructions don't work for you, or could be improved, let me know.

I think the reason for the application shortcuts on the main page being removed is because of what I understand to be the new "intention" for this model and that is, it's a phone first and handheld computer second. Meaning, that you can start dialing numbers to start a call like you would on any normal cell phone. If shortcut combos were wired like they were on previous BBerries, it may have been hard to accommodate this concept of the 7100t.
Dunno...just a guess on my part.

I understand what you're saying, except they could've just used the keys that do not have numbers on them, and since there are only 5 open keys, they could've let the user designate which applications those keys would open. Alternatively, they could've used the Alt key for this function, which wouldn't have interfered with the phone use. What makes it even more frustrating is that the options screen is on a different page and there is no ability to move those icons to the main page. Don't get me wrong, I love the device, I just think they dropped the ball on the shortcuts.

That's not what I was asking about. I was talking about "Caps lock", not just making one character a capital letter. On the 7230, if you held down shift and alt at the same time, it entered caps lock mode (i.e., all characters would be in caps until you turned it off). I was wondering if there is a way to do this with the 7100.

Sorry about that. I wasn't trying to be a smart*ss -- I guess I remembered incorrectly.
[i] I also am disappointed that you can no longer just type a name in the phone app and have it looked up. IB]
You can. It bothered me too until I read about it somewhere and got used to it. You have to do it a bit differently with the 7100.
From the home screen screen, e-mail screen or calendar screen, just hold down the green phone button (above the "ER" button) for about 3-4 seconds. It takes you to a lookup screen.
Search for the name using the letter keys. For example, "Smith would be the "AS" key twice, followed by "M," etc.
I also use another feature that a lot of people at work were surprised to learn. Just type the first two letters ("AS", "M" to get "SM"),then the space bar, then the first one or two letters of the first name. I happen to have 8 Smiths listed - "AS" , "M" space "GH" takes me right to George, with 4 keystrokes.
(makes more sense if you are looking at the phone)
(The green button trick does not work the same way if you are in the address book screen - it pre-supposes tht you want to call the highlighted name. Again, makes more sense if you walk it through while looking at the phone.)
At the risk of sounding like too much of a newbie, I excitedly tried to follow your instructions but I was not able to get past step one.
I connected my 7100t to my laptop via USB, opened Desktop Manager, and went to "Phone and Modem Options" in the Control Panel.
When I got there, there was no new Standard Modem on a new Port. Instead, there was something that said "Agere Systems" and nothing more, and when I queried that one in Diagnostics, nothing like you have listed came up.
Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks for this tip--I am very excited to get this working.
