I feel sorry for Italian iQue users.

Amazingly, I was able to load the lite basemap and the detailed maps for Tuscany onto my internal memory. Just to make sure, I reformatted my SadRisk. I was then able to compare the iQue maps from CS6 to a recent-ish paper map. It's quite depressing how far behind the game CS6 actually is. We in the UK thought we were sucking the hind tit compared to the US maps, but the Italians have a deal that is several bum levels lower than the UK. I really feel sorry for the Italian iQue users if that's the best NavTech can do.

To be fair though, towns like Firenze (Florence) are seemingly well mapped and the number of POIs that are listed is quite comprehensive.

My maps are loaded, the flights, hotel, car are all booked, so as you can, Ann, we are truly geared up for a great week. I might post a screenshot of our location somewhere!

Have a great time.

I was there this summer, 40 degC + heat, but it was worth it.

Thanks Coop. We have 4 weeks to go and the temps are roughly 14 degC at the moment so it'll be cold, but hopefully dry. I intend to put the iQue to very good use. I'll be packing the bean bag and the Gilsson antenna.

Daft question: I presume all cars use the same cig socket size - need to find out if the bean bag connector is usable? Can't see why not?

Bring a wind/rainproof jacket and all will be well, I'm sure.

I was first there about 8 years ago, in December... it rained sideways for about a week.

It was still fantastic!

I don't know about the cig lighter (or accessory outlet as they're called here). I think that they are the same... How about a quick call/email to the car rental place in Italy?

Everything is probably as you expect it to be, incl. cig outlets. One exception though: Italians consider it simple manners to use a spoon with spaghetti.

One caveat though: Italian 240 Volt sockets are completely different from others on the continent, but so are the british, aren't they? At least this goes for grounded plugs. But the smaller plugs used for chargers etc usually work. You might want to go into an appliance store and look around for plug adapters.

Have a nice trip!

Thanks Jonas. We have plenty of adapters, and I was suprised to see they use 240 volt. I had the idea they were on 110v.

But two things they have done correctly; (1) they use kilograms, and (2) kilometers. It'll be nice to work with units of measurement and weight I understand and grew up with.

Heading to Florence this weekend

Valentines day is this weekend and I am taking the wife to Florence. I just loaded up the relevant maps on the iQue and we are ready to go! We are not renting a car as we are planning to rely on public transportation. Hopefully there are no major football games planned while we are there as they can cause strikes and we would be out of luck. Who knows, we might rent a car while we are there and go to Assisi.

I used the hotel locator in the iQue to get the phone number for the hotel that we found over the internet. Since we called direct, instead of booking through one of the internet booking agencies, we are saving 40 euros. If it were not for the iQue, I don't know how I would have found the phone number.
Chow!

Have fun in Florence. For anyone who is going (and it seems to be all the rage right now) I can suggest a great place to stay.

It's called Hotel Giada. Right across the street from the Cappelle Medicee and the Bascilla San Lorenzo. A block away from the Duomo.

Great location, great price, and great people running the place.

Standard disclaimer: I don't have any financial interest in the place. I just enjoyed my stay. Yes, I'd go back in a minute!

Have a goodie! We also saved a lot by organising the trip ourselves. I spent hours and hours and eventually it all came together. I was told that if you want to hire a car, you must take the paper section of your driving licence as well. The photocard is not sufficient on its own. If you hire a car, do not let the agent pressurise you into buying insurance you don't need as some do. Your UK travel insurance and home (all-risks) coverage should be sufficient. Make sure that as much as possible is bundled into the rental price, such as road taxes, CDW, etc. Don't forget to check the car before you take it, and make sure it has a full tank of fuel and give it back full, otherwise they'll debit you for the handling charge. Guess you know this anyway, but no harm hearing again.

The Fiat Panda's cig socket for example is a very tiny one! And: Do NOT use spoon & fork in Italy eating spaghettis; they tolerate it but use only forks rolling the spaghettis on it in the plate!

Thank you all, it has been very pleasant to me reading this particular thread! As an Italian I find very interesting to see what foreigners think of us.
Regarding the original topic of this post.... I'm an Ique owner and I'm very satisfied of it, I live close to Milan and I find that here maps are very detailed. I can say that major cities are well covered and outside cities the detail of maps it's enough to survive.... so from my experience at the moment I have no matter to complain.
Last but not least, Bokkie have a great time in Florence!

Another Italian's contribution

Hello Bookie:
So you are coming to Firenze!
Super! And the weather here is truly nice (at least it was yesterday and it is today).
If you happen to come by my city (Trento) and feel like giving me a call: 0461 23 00 57

Back to the originall thread: well, I am not displeased with the amount of info. that is on the Navtec maps (version 5 still).
Maybe because I don't know any better.

Ciao and have a good visit here.

Azorat and Patgenox.

Please solve the spaghetti eating problem for me/us. The way I was taught to do it is to use the spoon to roll the spaghetti and eat with the fork always. If no one is looking, I use the spoon to eat the sauce that's left over after the spaghetti has been eaten.

Am I guilty of breaking Italian Eating Laws?

We normally eat spaghetti rolling them just with a fork without the aid of a spoon. Using the spoon it's not against the law..... we are very tolerant! The use of a spoon with spaghetti is a useful tip to indentify foreigners from miles...
So don't bother too much about how you eat them.... just try as much sauces as you can!
Ciao
