Just got home from an unexpected trip. Got a call from my sister a few weeks ago - Dad was in the hospital for emergency surgery (he's 80). Punched in the address and Betty took me there in four turns:
1. "Turn Left" onto Kanan Road, go 0.6 miles
2. "Keep Left to Ramp on Left" to US 101 East, 22 miles
3. " Keep Right then Keep Left" to IS 405N(becomes IS 5N)
--"continue 325 miles"
4. "Exit Right" on State 12 West, 47 miles (with a few wiggles and bear rights)
5. "Arrive at destination on Right", 395 miles later ( one gas/pit stop), average speed higher than posted. Hours faster than airline.
This is old family home area where I lived for 15 years a LONG time ago. Was really nice to have Betty guide me and show me all the maps and turns, automatically scrolling and zooming in and out, and leading me to the hospital without any glitches. Lots of new roads since I was there. Had other things to worry about. Thanks Betty.
Thanks all. Dad had a brain tumor that was secondary to a major Kidney tumor. Several other secondary tumors were also found.
Dad had an incredible recovery from the neurosurgery (miraculous is the word I'd choose) and was home in three days. For three weeks he made more incredible gains; Tuesday he passed all his doctor's tests. The family celebrated with a dinner out at his favorite restaurant, where he flirted with all the waitresses (as he has for years), and dominated the dinner as the family leader he has always been.
Wednesday afternoon he started feeling ill, and passed away that night in his sleep.
While I'm saddened at the loss of one of the most honorable men I've ever known, I am also elated that he did not have to endure the planned course of radiation and chemotherapy, and the debilitation that would accompany that, with little hope of any enduring good outcome.
I consider the weeks he was given at home, in full vigor and happiness, to be a very special gift to a very deserving man.
Again, Thanks to all for your care.
Robert
ps: Betty took me home again - a different route to visit some interesting places - just as easily.
Robert, please accept my condolences, too. My dad died of cancer that had traveled, also, including a brain tumor that was successfully removed....no matter how old you are, it's awful to lose your dad.
