Question My ipaq 3730 crashes on bootup

I have an ipaq 3730 which I bought second hand.
It had a problem with crashing and locking up when running particularly large programs and a soft reset was needed to get it going again.
It was running the original OS version 1.8? (I think). And bootloader was also running, (version 22.22? i think).
I could get more milage out of it if I played with the memory allocation in the setup screen but sometimes it would crash while doing this.
I thought it may have been a problem with the OS image so I wanted to upgrade it to Pocket PC2002 version.
The problem was that the compaq utility would only do this from the original parrot firmware.
So I got myself a serial sync cable and installed the original 'parrot' bootloader via hyperterminal and it worked fine and WinCE booted properly but still locked up.
I then proceeded to update the OS with the Compaq utility and it seemed to accept it fine.
But now on bootup the screen shows the ipaq boot screen with the version 2.20 showing and then proceeds the a white screen and sometimes the multi colored wait circle comes up and locks up.
I can't get any connection now with my serial cable or USB even through hyperterminal.
If I enter the update mode still no joy.

Do I have a dead ipaq now? Does anybody have any idea what the original problem could have been? (bad rom chip?)
Thanks in advance
