local CompUSA - iQue now in stock!

Although I've been lurking around the Garmin forum for some time this is my first post.

I would like to report for those who have been waiting on brick and mortar stores, that local CompUSAs now have the units in stock. My local store received 4 units today (but now down to 3 because I have one sitting on my desk).

I know CompUSA isn't the cheapest at $549.00 but my 2 year replacement warranty was almost up on my Clie 610 and they gave me $399.00 credit (original purchase price of the old Clie) toward the new iQue. Plus I went ahead and bought a new 2 year contract on the iQue. Lets just call it piece of mind as my Garmin will be making many trips to and from several cars and a single drop could mean a cracked screen (which the CompUSA plan covers).

So for those that have been waiting to actually hold/view one before deciding you can probably just drive to your nearest CompUSA.

I was quite suprised with the size as it was not as large as I had thought.

Off to play with my new toy!

Late,
Motegi

How big is it compared to the Sony NR/NX70V?

I would really appreciate it if somebody could post a pick of the 2 units next to each other..

I don't have the Clie NX/NR but I have a Clie N760 and Clie T665 that I could take iQue size comparison photos of. Having held the Clie flip style PDAs it is my opinion that the iQue is smaller. I'll try to post the photos tomorrow.

The screen is almost the same size, width about the same, but the iQUE is thicker.

I purchased my Fellows screen protectors from CompUSA today (they have all gone out of shelf in most other chains and have been replaced by Belkin brand).

I didn't see any iQue there. I am in the bay area.

I'm curious as to how much the 2 year contract cost? The reason I ask is because you paid at least $84 (not including sales tax) more for the iQue than it can be bought for. Garmin will replace a broken iQue screen for $75 or for a completely demolished (ie. run over by an 18 wheeler) for $150.

CompUSA's 2 year Tech Assurance Plan (TAP) costs $99 for PDAs in the iQue price range. It covers accidental damage as well as mechanical or other problems. They also offer a cheaper 1-year plan. PDAs that cost less than $200 have even cheaper warranties.

As I mentioned earlier the main reason I purchased from CompUSA was the fact that I had an existing Clie 610 which I had bought from them 2 years ago w/ 2-year TAP. The Clie had been having mechanical problems communicating with its cradle. The 2-year TAP allowed me to simply take the Clie into the store today with all materials and receipt and they then applied full original purchase price ($399.00) toward the Garmin iQue. Pretty good service if you ask me on a well used 2 year old Clie.

And in case you are wondering unlike some other store warranties CompUSA's TAP is purely a 1 time REPLACEMENT warranty whereby you are given a credit in the amount of original purchase price toward a NEW PDA if your existing unit fails. There is no attempt made to service or refurb the PDA. I had researched the issue extensively years ago at the time of my Clie purchase and decided that the CompUSA TAP was the best option - since technological advancment was inevitable over the 2 years and my PDA was going to be receiving HEAVY daily use and thus be prone to failure.

I may be mistaken but I believe that the CompUSA TAP can now be purchased on a PDA bought from a retailer OTHER than CompUSA. Apparently you need to bring your receipt and PDA into the store to be tested by their technicians and cleared for warranty. If anyone is interested you should probably call ahead to confirm.

Darrell,

Quite honestly had I not already had the Clie to return at CompUSA (and the accompanying $399 credit) I probably would have ordered the iQue from you based on all of the positive feedback I've been reading from your customers. I would have then taken the iQue to my local CompUSA to be warrantied under their 2 year TAP.

In the end, I left the local CompUSA with an iQue for only $149.00 today (plus $99.00 for the new warranty).

Motegi

I don't have any idea what a Clie is worth but it sounds like you came out very good in the end. Thanks.

I have an NR70V, and the iQue is almost the same thicness its thinnest point, and tapers to beome thicker near the top. I is almost half an inch shorter in overall length than the NR, and has the same size screen (320x480). It weights a few ounces less as well because it is plastic vs. the magnesium/plastic case of the NR.

I went and purchased the warranty

I purchased my iQue from TVNAV (excellent price, great customer service), but from motegi's experience, I went to the CompUSA store in Sunnyvale, CA and purchased the 2 year $99 warranty. Great terms as motegi mentioned and had the first hand experience. Thanks, motegi.

Motegi,

Does CompUSA have to carry the item in order for them to sell the service plan from an item bought elsewhere? How long do you have from the date of purchase to insure the item? This sounds like a great deal if it is true! Thanks guys.

I think CompUSA has to carry the item but I'm not 100% sure. The customer service person told me that one simply needed to bring in the PDA to be inspected/tested by their technicians to verify that it was fuilly functional before the warranty is issued.

Motegi,

I recieved my iQue on 8/27/03 and I brought it in to Compusa as you suggested. The TAP price were $79.99 for 2 years and $119.99 for 3 years. The clerk didn't even look at my iQue unit or the sale reciept. All he asked was for the serial number. I bought my unit at Online Marine.com for $458 shipped and the Compusa salesguy told me the regular price at Compusa is $549. He didn't even bother inspecting my unit. He said just take the two years plan and when you need to extend the plan, TAP will send you a notice to extend 3 months prior to expiration date. After he charged my credit card for $79.99, he said that's it. I didn't ask much and left the store. Wow, I guess I'll visit him within the 2 years time frame. Do you think Compusa will have the iQue in stock in two years from now?
