Here's a beta of a program I'm working on. Currently the functionality is minimal. Right now it's just a compass (the arrow always points north). In the next version you will be able to pick a waypoint (from the standard iQue waypoint database) and it will give distance and bearing to the waypoint.
I plan on adding a lot of features including customizable data fields. You will be able to select what information you want displayed in each field. The list will include all the standard stuff such as elevation, location, odometer, trip times, eta, current time, max speed, etc. All the colors and fonts will be customizable as well. You will also be able to customize the number and size of the fields. I also plan on having a zoomable 'radar scope' mode to help to get to a specific point (for geocaching etc.). I also plan on having proximity waypoints.
I'm taking suggestions for a new name. I don't really like qBuddy. It needs to be general since when finished the tool will have a lot of different funtionality and uses.
Feel free to post suggestions and comments here, but keep in mind that this code is very early and I already a lot of ideas.
P.S. It crashes if the lawyer screen comes up when qBuddy is running, so open the antenna first and then run.
If you can do that I will be one happy dude! Sounds perfect for boating! The enroute waypoints could take me around Islands, etc. Hey! how about that for a name? " ENROUTE! " Another thing-Would it be possible to have an "off route, recalculating bearing "
Thanks, friend, you programers make the iQue worth twice the price!
It seems that ique forgot about the boating folks when they put together the software. Other Garmin handlheld GPS units have a compass setup to point in the direction of the waypoint or mark. Of course, software can correct this. If Garmin is smart (and I think they are) they will watch the aftermarket software to see what new features are added.
I might have a problem. I put the antenna out and started the program. I get a warning that says " GPSLib not found, this program only supports the Garmin iQue. " What did I do wrong?
Thanks rw.

Haven't seen that problem. Try a soft reset to see if it fixes it.
Thanks for the utility. Can you add the compass and the bearing info (bearing and distance from waypoint) in such a way that I can see both - the map as well as the compass at the same time ?

There's no good way to do that. It would require qBuddy to receive events in the background while qMap is running and then draw on the screen. There would be no way to control how qMap updates the screen so whatever was displayed would be overwriiten when qMap updates the screen. Depending on the timing it wouldn't stay on the screen for long, or would be moved to a different position, etc. It would be a big hack.
The optimal solution would be for Garmin to expand the api to include a function that would return a bitmap of map section given the coordinates, scale, etc. I'm sure they already have such a function that they use when you do a qFind and then select details. It will show the map section and below it the address etc. They would just need to make this function available in the api....maybe if enough people asked Garmin nicely....
Ok, Rich, here's a weird one. It's about your icon.
I run LauncherX v1.11 on my iQue. After I installed qBuddy, I couldn't find the icon for it. I searched for the file using LauncherX's built-in file browser, and it was listed, but the icon was nowhere to be found. When I exit LauncherX (returning to the default PalnOS launcher), then I see your icon. Very strange... The program itself, however, looks real good so far.
Anybody else here running LauncherX on their iQues want to try this for themselves? How 'bout it, Ann?

I didn't include the lower resolution icons in the application. Since it's designed for the iQue I didn't think there was a need. LauncherX must use one of the lower resolution icons even though it's a highres device.
