A wonderful machine
I began almost 10 years ago with a 95 LX.
I have now two 200 LX ( 1 in 2Mb, 1 in 4 MB).
It's really a wonderful machine, and I can't work without it every day. I have more than 35 databasis on it and, actually, I have not found the .gdb limit, except in terms of converting this .gdb to the .mdb ms access.

Really a bad idea to discontinue this machine, because the jornadas (windows CE) are not at all interesting. They only give you a new version of all the problems you can have every day with your PC !

The machine that does everything
The HP200LX is basically a miniature version of an IBM PC XT, with the exception of a few features. The computer houses a ROM which contains a GUI, MS-DOS 5.0, along with utilities, drivers, and more. The 2MB model should be avoided unless you have access to PCMCIA RAM cards, as 2MB is the size of the RAM disk. The infrared port could have used improvemnt, since it only transmits and receives approximately 2-6 feet, but this could be modified. The battery life is exceptionally good, until you plug in a preipheral [e.g. modem, flash RAM, etc.], which causes the batteries to drain. Always carry extra batteries! The GUI on the system has alot of programs, some of which aren't too usefull. They contain a terminal, file manager, notepad, and the GUI looks like Windows 3.x in a way. Despite all of this, the screen could've used a backlight, but the visibilty is good, and the screen is non-glare. The machine uses a piezo element for the sound which doesn't sound as good as the piezo in the 95LX. Also you are not limited to DOS or the GUI. You can install Linux onto this machine. Overall, in my opinion, it's better than anything else that you can find today [with the exception of the 700LX or 1000CX], since it really is just an IBM compatible shrunk down for your pocket. Try to attempt any of these tasks with something on the market today.

The Great Machine

I have used the HP 200-lx for one year, and I am very satisfied with it. I was oveclocked it myself - changed the crystal from cca 15.9 to 32 MHz, install speed-up driver and it works Great!. I have also handmade serial cabels.

p.s. You have a mistake in the detailed description of this machine - It have IRDA port, and the speed of serial port is 115 kbps

HPLX200-downloads?
I found this web site while looking for new downloads for my HPLX200. With great interest I read the opinions and learned enthusiastically that their are quite few other users of this wonderful little machine. Who can help me with some information about new little dos programs and downloads. Thank you very much! Konrad

I love the Hp 200lx 32 mg dble speed machine
I have used this palmtop now for approx 5 years. I am a surgical nurse and it never leaves my pocket. I have many nursing formulas, texts and references for my profession. Plus i have used it to help relax children as they are waitting for their surgery by playing games, I am able to browse the web and get email with the standard pcmcia type II card (for extra memmory, modems, ethernet) and can print with the IR printers. I could go on and on, everytime a visor/ppc user tells me what NEW thing they are doing with their PDA, I tell them, I have been doing that for years! :P Marta

Usability

I have been using the HP200 since 1994. It is a great machine. I use it to primarily run a PIM called Lotus Agenda. This application allows me to enter things like "see Robert at 5pm tomorrow" and it instantly enters the appointment into its calendar. It can handle recurring appoints as well. Because it is a free form manager, I can sort all sorts of items of information into categories that I create beforehand. Why am I using this program? Because it is a lot more powerful than the PIMs that come standard with the Palmtop. They are adequate to be sure but they get a bit slow and cumbersome once one gets up above 200 contacts. Furthermore the PIM applications are not linked together allowing true contact management. Another reason for using Lotus Agenda. The HP200 comes with a PCMCIA slot and this allows modems, flash memory cards and the like to be added. The unit is well support with shareware and different websites provide plenty of tips and hints eg. www.palmtoppaper.com. Apart from the Lotus Agenda I find the HP Calculator the next most useful program. It is supplied standard with the HP200 and is extremely powerful with loads of standard unit conversions, and financial calculations possible. I'm in finance and so the ability to quickly calculate NPVs and IRRs for uneven cashflows is really useful. Which brings me onto another major advantage of the HP200: it sports a separate numeric keypad. Because it is so small, the machine goes everywhere with me. Doing calculations on the fly is very common. Having a separate numeric keypad really helps. Alas none of the new CE machines have one. One of the biggest reasons why (apart from Lotus Agenda) I haven't shifted. Lotus 123 is also supplied but this is not Y2K compliant. Enthusiasts have managed to double the clock speeds and add additional RAM memory above the standard amount provided by Hewlett Packard. Of course this voids the HP warranty but I haven't heard of anyone complaining. There is a wealth of DOS software out there which will keep the HP200 popular with many people for a long time to come. A pity that HP has stopped building them.
